painting engine and gearbox

what paint should i use?

also with my engine bay being painted black, i was thinking of painting the block of the engine something diffrent, nothing lairy as i still want a oem look but bit stumped for ideas

also would it be possible to clean up my sump and polish it? and if i do polish it would could i do to preserve it, give it a spray with some kinda clear coat?

RE your first post: As long as your prep is all good then the finish will look good, personally Hammerite suffices ;)

I've always used hammerite

Never had a problem with it coming off, but you need to have it Mega clean in the first place

Just normal hammerite. I've always used it, and it's always been fine. daub it on like it doesn't cost owt and you'll have no problem.

re your sump, when you polish it to a high shine it doesn't need any sort of coating to preserve it, as thats the whole point of polishing it. it preserves itself.

any idea on good products to polish it also going to polish the strut-brace i have aswell


ive seen the polishing clay bars somewhere for drills, are they any good :confused:

The Hammerite smooth will do TJ.

Th polishing bars are ok you need a good mop though, cheaper ones seem to fall to bits. I find autosol and a rag does a good job

right what shops do you guys buy hammerite smooth at and how much did it cost you?

ive seen it in b&q and its over 40 quid for 2.5ltrs, seems fooking expensive to me

well, considering you only need about 500ml to paint an engine.........

so you think i could get away with a 700 odd ml tin and do the brakes and engine? the cans seemed small for how thick the paint goes on :confused:

so can i get away with painting the gearbox with standard paint?

Proper engine enamel from Halfords, Frost etc. I got on with that a lot better than Hammerite on my engine block. Bright red or blue looks quite factory and fresh looking.

I would/did clean and apply a product to the gearbox to avoid scrapes/chips ruining the look of it.

I have used the brush on hammerite smooth on the block

Then rattle can on gearbox
