View Full Version : Getting out of Novas and buying a Sierra!

The time has come to change car so I went on a search for something bigger, found this;

Sierra cosworth replica, 2.3 16v on carb, fully pollybushed, koni springs and shocks all round.
Had a bare shell respray and resto 18 months ago

Put a deposit down, picking it up next week :D

So both my Novas will be up for sale soon as along with all my parts very shortly, pics;

2.3...? Duratec or I4?!

looks alright, bet it sounds nice! with out sounding like im telling me nan how to suck eggs, did you get a good poke around the underside as they can rust as, if not worse, then a nova :O

dont feel the cosworth badges myself, bit like sticking a m3 badge on a 316

pottersrebel
03-11-12, 07:44 PM
looks very tidy but id much prefer a yb powered mk1 escort lol ill keep on dreaming

Spudly
03-11-12, 07:58 PM
Agreed with turbojolt, silly haveing the badge on it imo, and shouldnt it have skirts/door spats too?

Colour is nice and it looks clean :d

Nova-nation
03-11-12, 07:59 PM
Yeah 2.3 i4, I love it how it is, all I might do is change the wheels, fancy escort cosworth wheels.

Spudly
03-11-12, 08:06 PM
You say that, but then if you get the skirts and spats fitted you will love it even more, i wasnt going to fit the skirts and spats on my old cav TD, loved it after i did though :d

Before..

i'm curious about this engine... is it one of the yank ones or something?? cos i know they had a 2.3 pinto lump, as they turboed it & andy rouse won the btcc in one the year before the cosworth came out, but it was an 8v.

edit... it was in the later scorpio...

steviegsi
03-11-12, 09:06 PM
Same 2.3 l4 that came in the galaxy's iirc. Whip it out and get a 2.9 cosworth (boa/bob I think ) in there for cheap power.

Certainly looks the part .

Yeah it's out of the scorpio, I'd rather keep to what's in it, 2.9 is a bit thirsty for me...

Saying that I know were there is a real rotten fossil with mint engine and leathers for scrap money :D

Nice one for joining the winning team mate! Looks smart!

So many Vaux owners have such a chip on their shoulders about Ford, it's unbelievable. lol

mowgli
03-11-12, 10:26 PM
i've never understood the hatred myself...

70's vauxhalls were shocking, including the chevette.. which was no way near a match for the mk1/2escort
the mk3 escort was not as good as the mk1 astra (imho)
the sierra was a good car, even if the early ones were really light on the rear end (personal experience at the time)

L14MNP
03-11-12, 10:30 PM
I can't even compare the two marques on an even field tbh. Ford has a rich motorsport history, and Vauxhall has...

Vauxhall has always been the poor second cousin to me. I obviously like Novas (Fiestas more), but everything else comes runner up.

The mk3 Escort came with independent rear suspension, and stormed the motorsport world.

That alone makes it the winner for me. The two little letters, RS have been on some iconic cars too.

Spudly
03-11-12, 10:33 PM
Agreed, i am still to own an XR2 at some point, fell in love with my mates years back, owned a 2i and loved it, but the 2 has always been the sexier one imo :d

Mk1 Fiesta Super Sports are nice

But thankfully Ford did the world a favour and used crap steel so the old stuff is rotten out of view

Think I'll ssssshhhh before I get moaned at again

Better at everything, even rusting. ;)

Made of such crap material, yet people bend over backwards to keep them alive, don't just send them over the bridge cos they need a battery tray and rear arches repaired. lol

Says a lot. :d

mowgli
03-11-12, 10:41 PM
the xr3 was not a great handling car, they admitted they got the suspension geometry wrong, it was a ford of germany project. they shipped some of the old avo engineers over & they sorted it.. the xr3i was the result. the rs1600 was purely for racing and was very good at it... the rst started off as an outright performance car & ended up more of a hairdressers car....

my mrs had an early 1.6 ghia with spax suspension, a janspeed exh & cloverleaf wheels... after we sorted out a million faults & removed dark brown window tint, it was quite good, then a lorry hit it... the second one she owned needed a recon engine and then i nearly died in it.. and that sort of put me off them.

re the vaux motorsport history...

its mostly down to gerry marshall & a spaceframe with an australian f5000 engine...but it did have a griffin badge..
jimmy mcrae gets an honourable mention for being the king of the circuit of ireland in a chevette hsr.
then the xe engine came along so gm could beat vw in f3...

mowgli
03-11-12, 10:45 PM
Its just banter :thumb:

there is a lot of hatred...

the 70's fords were better than the 70's vauxhalls, i think their communists were paid more than vauxhalls communists

in the 80's gm fought back & ford actually lost a huge number of sales when they launched the sierra, it was too new & the mk2 cav cleaned up in fleet sales... i personally think the mondeo turned the tide, and i struggle to understand how ford are losing money when you look at their current range...

L14MNP
03-11-12, 10:48 PM
Damn it. deleted my reply. Can see why that would put you off mate!

XE coupled with Cleland ftw.

mowgli
03-11-12, 10:53 PM
i still have some screws in my left knee cos of it & i have trouble putting names to faces.. i did make the steering wheel L shaped, with my head...

clelands first btcc championship with the astra was a bit of a con, as they had to take enough cars with them to fill up his class, then they just followed him round.. his second was far more fun..

L14MNP
03-11-12, 10:58 PM
The gauge of the steel in my mk3 is a joke mind. I wouldn't like to be in an accident in a reasonably new one, let alone a fatigued 30 year old one.
I remember the 1300 3dr my mam had, after someone attempted to nick it, it was laid up.
Was ideal to shelter in on those rainy schoolday afternoons when I got home first (had no key)

I could watch that Cleland/Soper etc Cav battle over and over again. Infact I do.

Looks a nice car, wish you all the best with it dude, my dad's always had fords, still has one now, my first car was a 1.1 first ghia an i fitted lots of xr2 parts etc loved it served me well till I crashed it, imo they understeer wose then a 1.2 nova.
Then I got an xr2i an the thing was way quicker the my mates gtes gsis at the time, but it just kept breaking itself lol so I turned to the nova after driving my mates n seeing how cheep to mod them was etc.. never looked back still have the effliction now!
What I will say is the seiera is built better interior wise then a cav imo.

I first started looking at cavaliers... But they are more expensive for me to insure, and as I prefer sierra I got one :)

The Sierra twin cams for some reason were twin cam 8 valve. The rs2000 engine is the same engine with a 16v head.

The smoked rear lights came on a 4x4 and mines a 2wd and should have Ambers, plus I prefer them.

The cage is a pain but it's there for a reason, I fancy doing the odd trackday plus my new engine should be 550hp rwd it will a bit slidy.:) can still squeeze 2 in the back some shape.

Sounds good! They weight around 1250kg which is nothing compared to 4x4 jap stuff! Best for a road car is stage 3,330-350hp. Just an injector change and chip needed, loved mine at stage 3 was my daily drive good on fuel etc.
