View Full Version : Kadett C 1978
a few weeks ago i bought this kadett c. it is a 1978 1.2 it was dry stored for the last 15 years. always wanted one of these, it is very clean for its age the only bad part is the bottom of the 2 doors are rotten. it has some surface rust around it and a few rust blisters on some panels. underneath is perfect not a bit of rust.
plans when i ever get a chance is to sort out the doors and any bits of rust mainly boot floor and around boot seal. going to lower it, full service, new mudflaps, steering arms need new joints, brakes refurbished. inside is clean but needs 2 new sun visors. would love to drop in a 1.6 8v on twin 40s but i think i have to use a manta gearbox.
i am going to do all the welding work and hopefully get my uncle to give it a full respray.
basically i just want it looking like new, lower about 80mm with some nice wheels.

that looks amazingly rot free..
the original period wheels suit them so well, what wheels are you planning to fit?
i am not sure on the wheels yet. i was looking at ats classics pic below, bbs or even get the standard wheels banded.

Have you had a good look under the front wings yet?
i gave underneath a quick rub with a wire brush and they seem very good, i will be taking the wings off soon and try and bring it to bare metal and weld if any rust then prime and paint over, hopefully they are not to bad

That's a nice car you got there!
2.0 16v manual omegas still go for cheap money....that would be an interesting running gear to fit...

Iron on the kadett C forum had gone for that choice

The omega gearbox is a very popular choice for the rwd conversions - I'm using one.
thanks, might go with the omega setup in the future, a donor car can be bought cheap enough. my uncle is going to have a look at it this week to give me a price on a respray.
got some more work done on it today, i have most of the welding done now. i got the gearbox and engine out then De-gressed and washed the engine bay. i think i am going to leave the trims off the side of the car looks better i think.

looks a lovely car ill be watching this keep up the good work
i do love the 70's opels and this one is especially nice for me cos my mate had a blue ascona on rostyles.. i know it was bigger than a kadett, but it reminds me of some seriously good times.. back in those days, a kid with a new driving licence could sit alongside his mate on L plates!!!! i had my licence first, so we would be doing 110 on magnetic L plates.. great days.....
keep up the good work.
Thanks mowgli. love old cars they can be so easy to work on at times and they stand out from the crowd. i don't think i have ever meet one on the road!
next main things on the shopping list will be:
60mm suspension kit.
inner tie rods.
handbrake cables.
passenger side mirror.
a few engine gaskets.
steering boss kit.
who are you getting the springs off?? will manta ones fit?
not really sure at the moment. i would like spax setup but that is about €500! there is cheap setups on ebay.de for around the 300 mark but i will have to mind out more. i am not sure if the manta ones are the same but i would imagine they would be very similar.
First car I ever driven was a kadett, my mums that my dad fitted a pinto into, soooooo want one again lol

Dont go with spax.Im sure they just guess the spring heights when they send them out.Ive had nothing but trouble getting the right length with them.Plus the shockers aint the quality they used to be.
On my mk1 astra estate i bought all Gazz adjustable shocks from www.motorsportworld.co.uk (http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk) and you cant beat them for quality or price.I`ll be using them on my chevette and magnum when im at that stage.
some more pics. spent most of today stripping out the front seats and carpet luckily found no rust bad rust :D going to paint it with blue hammerite to stop any rust forming in the future.
started to clean and paint some bits. got the windscreen fitted as well that was a mission! still need to fit the chrome strip.

It looks really cool with the side trims removed and the colour goes well :thumb:
small update, bought some 60mm spax springs but wont be here for about 2 weeks.
ordered a tin of paint that is to stop rust. its for the floor and underneath the car and inside wheel arches.
getting the engine ready now, have it all stripped for some new paint and give everything a good clean. also waiting to hear back about a full engine gasket kit from Germany.
i got the front number plate fitted as well and the new inner and outer tie rods with new gaiter covers.
once the engine is ready to go in i will bring it into the other shed and fit it along with painting, fit interior back in, fit mud flaps, lowering springs, new anti roll bar drop links and a few other bits to finish it off.
all going to plan it should be fit for the road again in a few weeks

Better still get the rostyle berlinettas banded :-)
Very nice & very rare car you have there mate,i want one lol
thanks, i have the springs fitted now i will get some pics up after. i am thinking of getting the rostyles i have on it now banded should look good and will work out cheap enough for me because i know a lad who can split them on a lathe and get the bands cut and rolled for handy money. i can balance, weld and paint them my self.
