View Full Version : exhaust/manifold wrap is it worth it
hello all
rite i rebuild the engine in the nova a few months ago (1300 8v) looks all nice etc but no matter how many time i spray the manifold black it just burns off and looks poor :(
(4 into 1 manilfold )
so been looking at how to get it to stay black etc and i though maybe black exhaust wrap.
now the question is is it worth it? dose it make much different? is it worth the hassle of trying to do it?
i don't think its necessarily worth it for a 1300.
have you tried using stove enamel (the stuff they use on wood burning stoves & flue pipes)?? it hardens with temperature.
ive tryed 3 layers of high temp paint on it but it dont last very long... i will go and get some of the stove enamel didnt really think of that stuff.
the trouble is that you rarely get to see under a bonnet when the engine is working really hard, cos the manifold will be glowing orange...

The exhaust manifold I bought for my car off ebay was already wrapped, I probably wouldn't have bothered doing it myself as I was skeptical about the stuff, but I have been really impressed. After the car has been out for a good run, you can quite happily handle the manifold as it never gets past comfortably warm, whereas the rocker cover for instance is hot enough to burn the skin. So it clearly helps keep the heat more confined, and it makes the manifold look prettier - I too have had previous experience of supposedly high temperature paint coming straight off a manifold.

i heatwrapped my smallblock 1.6 8v 4 branch manifold, makes it look alot nicer but all i can say is wear gloves and cover your arms up

this.
also it helps to soak the stuff in water before putting it on aswell
Remember that the heat wrap just confines the heat, it doesn't reduce it, so all the heat is still in the manifold, making them prone to cracking. Buy any tubular manifold and they state the warranty is void if heat wrapped.
Also, it goes from looking pretty, to pretty sh1t in no time, ripped dirty wrap is worse than a rusty manifold imo

This is the reason my manifold cracked around the joining box between the four pipes and the rest of the system after the driving back from billing to Scotland a few years ago, the manifold was rust free and only a few years old !
The manifold got hot enough to turn some of the wrap to turn into proper bits of glass lol
So now I have had a stainless steel manifold built by a local stainless exhaust place not cheap but will outlast the car most likely flol
