View Full Version : Brake fluid...

Seeing as I've got my front calipers, discs and pads changed over, the system now needs a full drain and bleed. The fluid has never been changed lol

I have two questions:

1) How many litres does a Nova brake system take from empty?

2) DOT 4 or DOT 5.1?

5.1 and a litre should do it, but get 2.

Cool... I was looking at 5.1 - boiling point is higher so whouls be better with keen driving. To empty out existing fluid is it just a case of open the nipples and pump till it empties?

Was looking at ATE Super Blue but that is DOT4. I'm guessing any 5.1 fluid will be fine for the job right?

I wouldn't pump it empty, can easily flip the seals in the master cylinder doing that. Just empty the res, and bleed about a quarter of a litre through each corner to flush it all through.

When i bleed the full system i open all the bleed nipples and get a friend of mine to pump the pedal until i can see clean brake fluid coming out of each calliper / cylinder.

Old brake fluid - horrible mucky black/green colour

New brake fluid - looks like piss ( tastes like it too )

I use an easibleed, there should be a guide n the articles section.
It'll be the best £20 you ever spend.

I ran Mintex oem grade 5.1 in my vx220 and that had sintered carbon pads, so almost as evil as you can get on brake fluid lol it was fine.

What stuart says,

Easybleed is awesome for this job,

But make sure your calipers are fitted etc, dont do what i done, didn't have the front calipers fitted and it popped the piston straight out the caliper lollol

Lesson learned.

I don't care if ATE super blue is dot 4, its awesome imo

I've had dot 5 fluid boil over but never with the blue fluid!

Maybe get new nipples lol if they're all rusted up

My nipples are clean and pretty new. I'm tempted to go Super. Blue. The calipers are on the car. DOT 5 is silicone based and is different to 5.1. I'll look out for mintex 5.1

Got a bleed kit. Don't think it's easibleed but it has a one way valve so should be doable on my own

I prefer eeazibleed as your at the wheel and with a one way valve your at the pedal meaning 2 man op
