In a bit of pickle lol In the market for another motor, small hatchback, pleasing to the eye, got to be a diesel & reasonably new with a fair gob of power.

Narrowed it down to the aforementioned as theres plenty of them about.

Both gotta be able to take ATLEAST 30k miles a year with ease.

Anyone got any input on either of these? Good, bad? Common problems? Got zero interest in potential mods either, only after a replacement commuter to battle the M6 every morning.

I am swaying towards the Audi anyway, something different as Ive never had one before. Already got an Astra on the fleet (albeit a puny 1600 16v). And the Audis seem to hold there value more on high mileage compared to the Astra's.

Because the problem Ive got at the minute is Im stuck with a fully loaded Corsa SRi CDTi thats now on 107k & worth fcuk all as its a GM, not even owned it a year yet & already done 27k miles. So dont want to fall foul of that trick again.

Got no interest in anything like that until Im living nearer to work TBH. Im already using around £320 of fuel a month as it is.

EDIT: I did however go look at this the other weekend

Lot of money for a Golf mind :/

Re: Mondeo ST TDCi, some one at work has one & he reckons he doesnt see over 22mpg. And the actualy physical size of it, after a small hatch, CBA messing around backing a 20ft long ocean liner off my drive at 6am every morning lol (anyone thats been to my house will understand.... U shaped driveway next to a hump back bridge).

golfs have allways been retardedly expensive, but why a hatch mike? 4 doors and a boot are the future!

And Ive never liked saloons lol and its not as if I need one either. Although a nice A4 TDi Cabrio would go down a treat lol lol

Mike have you considered say a Bmw 118/120d ? Very good for fuel/insurance and tax. We've just swapped to a 118d from a cooper s and its halfed all mentioned costs for us. If your budget can stretch to an m sport you'll have a great looking car for the money. Just an idea!

Nick.

Mike go test drive them both and decide off that dude, I my missis sister has the A3 and I don't like it personal, non there not as nice inside as the golf and feel really cramped etc, and there's NO head room in them, and not drove the astra but there nice enough.

Skoda fabia vrs? Ive had one a couple of months now and love it,remapped to 180 bhp & still returns 55-60 mpg, also has the 1.9 tdi pd engine that you get in the higher up the range audi's & vw's,6 speed box etc.

See I've worked on astras, golfs and a3's. tbh I think the golf interior is worse than the a3. Id Get pre dpf 2.0 diesel a3. Injectors are a known issue, but there is a recall on them. Only other problem area is the dmf really. At least you don't have to take the subframe off the a3 to get the box out like you do on the Astra! The early 2.0 diesel had an issue with the heads too.

another vote for the a3, never driven an astra that shape but i was incredibly impressed with how my my mates 2.0 diesel a3 drove, and there good on fuel!

Jesus that IS expensive for a mk4 golf, i payed peanuts for a pre pd gt tdi mk4 golf last month and i love it. So comfy and mines had a few bits dont to it and it runs 145bhp and 230lb of torque so still has some poke to overtake. Best thing is it gets 60+ mpg everyday on the way to work.
I really want 170 mk5 golf gt tdi, there so nice, and you get them for 6-7k.
Heres mine, which owes me still under a grand, after changing the wheels as didnt like these rs4 reps.

Bit of a biased answer from me as I have an a3 2.0tdi, it's a perfect car for doing the miles In around the town I get around 40mpg and out of town usually around 60mpg, that was with a remap I suppose but it's cheap to insure and £135 a year road tax

Skoda Derv,

If its going to loose value due to high miles then limit your loss by buying a cheaper VAG car?

Fabia VRS ?

But skodas ride so very very badly :(

Passat ftw, eh seem better value than the golf/a3's and aren't tiny/crap/uncomfortable etc
