Battery Gauge Reading

What should the battery gauge read at when the engine is running and nothing else is on e.g. fan or heated rear screen? Mine has always read at just over half way, but today for some strange reason, its just under half way. Why could this be? Cheers

usualy they drop if something is draining it, such as fans/lights etc. or maybe alt is not producing quite as much voltage. if its not charing it would sit at 1/4 mark
