View Full Version : Silly thoughts... WRX/Disco/others

So then for those who might need a little help :p
We are a family of two cars, one is the utterly homo but insanely ace Abarth 500 and the other is an ageing 54 plate PD310 Passat Estate.

The Passat is due for replacement in the next 6 months or so depending how long I can deal with its sheddyness.
Long term 'grown up' thoughts have been a 3 or 5 20D Touring, V50 D5 or similar (not french or Ford or Merc or Vaux lol )

Short term 'one year' car ideas are
a 2005/6ish UK WRX sport wagon/tourer/estate/wtf they call it
An early Disco 3 tdv6
or A8/Phaeton

Now the one year car idea is to pick something up just after a service and run it for a year with (fingers crossed) no running costs other than fuel, insurance and depreciation. Basically to tick the box of owning a car of X kind to scratch the itch.

Are the mid 00's WRX's still car thieves wet dreams? Are most likely to be dogs now? and would one run for a year of sedate use without any major costs associated (aside from fuel :p )

The killer for the A8/Phaeton idea is that a kids bike wont really go in the boot eaily due to the saloonness of it :(
And the drawback on the Disco is for the kind of money I wish to spend (sub 10k) it'd be a leggy well specced one or an ok miles poverty spec.

Anyone got decent experience with any of the above, be it seeing them through work or having owned etc... I'd love the idea of an Impreza for a year as it'd release the inner chav lol

arnt the foresters (spelling) sold in wrx form, would have thourght they have been ragged around less then the imprezas

Stuart
06-10-12, 05:35 PM
Good shout, just had a look, cant find any WRX ones BUT the 2.5 turbo engine seems the same etc and the Forrester has an acceptable spec vs price.

Just thought of another off the wall idea, R32 B6 Passat lol 4wd, toys and very cheap to buy

Andy
06-10-12, 05:39 PM
Foresters are ace,id have one.Its a good size and goes well. Can also be a clown in it like in an impreza lol

Spudly
06-10-12, 05:54 PM
I was also going to suggest a Forrester, if you can find one then get a prodrive one as theye slightly wider arched, and have the same tickled up underpinnings as the top spec wrx sti, a mate had one a few years back (53 reg i think) and it was amazing, took us out for a blast in it and went like absolute stink, really impressed and will still manage muddy trails, our average winter type of thing, perfect mix of practicality and fun i reckon :thumb:

Is that not a Galant VR-4??

Same thing iirc. Legnums are the imports I believe.

How about....

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u203/andyp74199/range-rover-black.jpg

Friend of a friend got one about a month ago, 90 odd thousand miles, leather, blah blah, for about £8500.

stu, of you can cope with 28ish mpg, the disco 3 tdv6 is a brilliant vehicle.. if i'd got the coin, i'd have one...

what about an octavia 4x4 estate??? basically tt running gear in a load lugger...

John
06-10-12, 08:50 PM
This example is seriously overpriced, and only for example purposes. i've seen a few good'uns make about 8k.

Been looking at those myself recently seem a bit of a bargain for what it is. Are they auto only?

John
06-10-12, 08:58 PM
yeah they're tip, auto. (steering wheel mounted paddles)

steviegsi

Meh, that's my interest gone lol . Like most modern auto boxes I guess they are 'sealed for life' and destined to go tlts up after X amount of miles. Quick google suggests horrific running costs when/if they go wrong, and that was them being compared to m3's and m5's!!

John
06-10-12, 09:13 PM
Yeah not ideal i'll agree. They're designed to be oil change free iirc. The gearboxes are a real weak point, but if i had one i'd make sure it was changed regularly. They are massive spec cars for the money though.

mowgli
06-10-12, 09:22 PM
/\ gm gearboxes from the 80's were meant to be oil change free too........lol....

Legnum VR-4 Bi-turbo, its the import estate version of the Galant!

John

Naughty John is naughty!

Sorry can't we use ebay links for anything now? :) It was an s4 avant stu. (you had best remove the other one too lol!)

06-10-12, 09:34 PM
What about a Skoda Superb? Jeffrey has one and I could not believe what he packed into it on his last visit over. His has the split bootlid/tailgate

Stuart
06-10-12, 10:30 PM
I'd sooner be nice to Edd than buy a Skoda, I had a very recent Octavia as a hire car when the VX was smashed up. It was 6-7 years newer than the passat and on less than 10% of the miles too and frankly it was the most hideous car I've ever driven.

There are claims that they use the same parts as the rest of vag but I really can't see how if it was as nasty as that. The not redeeming feature was nailing it everywhere and still getting 60mpg lol.

Stuart
06-10-12, 10:33 PM
stu, of you can cope with 28ish mpg, the disco 3 tdv6 is a brilliant vehicle.. if i'd got the coin, i'd have one...
..

That's a bonus, as I believe you are as picky and difficult as me for choosing a car (Skoda suggestion aside)

bazil
06-10-12, 10:39 PM
RS6 Avant would be my choice,

A disco ain't a car, it's a boat with wheels,
Subaru? No thanks, all the do is make a funny noise and get over shadowed by Evo's

Christ even an old RS4 would hump pretty much most of the cars mentioned here ( bar the rs6 ) and still carry a boot load of crap in the process,

Stuart
06-10-12, 10:44 PM
Hmmm a v8 would be a giggle, not sure I fancy fuelling that though as I'm sure I'd be lucky to even see 25mpg lol

Discos are excellent, just a shade boaty, but something I want to have owned at some point, along with the chavbaru.

steviegsi
06-10-12, 10:53 PM
Legnum VR-4 Bi-turbo, its the import estate version of the Galant!

Police in Belfast had a couple of black ones a few years ago. Truly menacing looking car in black.

bazil
06-10-12, 11:02 PM
Wait for a disco 4 then, disco 3 looks a touch like it was left in the womb too long,

Get a twin turbo 4.2 V8 barge,

Stuart
06-10-12, 11:03 PM
Lmfao, rs4 costs the same to Insure as a wrx.... This is silly.
Ved looks a bit evil though, even for a one year car.

Waiting for a disco 4...... Could be there some time, and that can be in the future after a 3 and other stupidness.

Stuart
06-10-12, 11:35 PM
oh FFS

Just been on Fuelly.com looking at s4 V8 mpg figures.... Worked out it would cost £4K in fuel for the year rather than £2K in a derv. Then noticed I was looking at Fuelly in US units, that instantly 'saved' a grand, therefore man maths means this 100% makes sense. John I will keeeeeil you lmao

Andy
06-10-12, 11:37 PM
s4's are nice,a friend has just bought one, brought it round and revved it,it moved.Sold LOL

bazil
06-10-12, 11:38 PM
Don't look at the 4.2 V8 RS6 bi-turbo figures then lol

Old RS4's were V6 twin turbo, 380 odd bhp
The 4.2 V8 non turbo S4 was 333 bhp ish I think,

Get a old RS4 and avoid the high tax,

Stuart
06-10-12, 11:43 PM
there is a small window of the V8 B6 S4 in the 'cheaper' tax bracket too :) tbh if I'm going down this silly route I'd sooner have a V8 than a boosted V6.

Jack
06-10-12, 11:45 PM

Why not? Only downside I see to imports is some insurance companies are spakkers so you're limited slightly but otherwise I wouldn't be bothered by jap

Andy
06-10-12, 11:45 PM
cream trevor,tinted windows,nice cars,my mate just paid 12 for an 08 plate s4.

Getting parts, having to x reference stuff, no real history, usually sold by asshats like KTC etc.

Jack
06-10-12, 11:53 PM
Parts is easy, Mitsubishi and Toyota will supply through the dealers. Just gotta find a decent importer that translates the history instead of clocking them back to 60k and 'forgetting' to underseal them lol

Andy
06-10-12, 11:55 PM
Put them on the overnight tab from harry.

Jon_nova1
07-10-12, 07:59 AM
Check the insurance out on an import first, i've got an import car and its ridiculously cheap to insure, to get parts i just take them off different models and the rest are mainly dealer parts

edit, its gone up slightly for me lol

John
07-10-12, 08:27 AM
sorry lol

Jon_nova1
07-10-12, 08:36 AM

Stuart
07-10-12, 09:19 AM
The only thing massively putting me off is the suspension issues..... John, can you fix for free lol.

I really don't like Far East cars that much, just fancy scratching a chav itch with a uk model. Last time I looked at an import (Opel speedster from Ireland, so not a real import but they classed it as such) it was three times the price of a uk car.

John
07-10-12, 09:23 AM
what drc? yep get one without.

John
07-10-12, 09:23 AM

like that?

How do I know if the car has DRC?
Its actually cheaper to run a V8 petrol Audi than a TDV6 Disco lmao

turbojolt

there one of them cars, that looks like its alot more expensive then it really is, lot of car for 8k

John
07-10-12, 04:42 PM
That's an se stu. Much better spec in s line. I don't actually think the a6 had drc, only on the rs6

Nobby
07-10-12, 07:05 PM
I work for Jaguar Land Rover and tbh the Disco 3s are "average" if they have been looked after regulary etc etc watch out for turbo, egr, brake pipes, all suspension arms, handbrake actuator and any other kind of ****ty wiring faults it wants to have depending on what day of the week it came from usually Friday afternoon jobs lol

mowgli
07-10-12, 07:31 PM
but they are still light years ahead of disco 1 & 2...the old ones were truly shonky....

Stuart
07-10-12, 07:37 PM
Given the plant shuts down at 1300 on a friday it wouldnt be any friday afternoon cars.
Based purely on running costs the S4 is looking favourable, although Big engine Beemers will be looked at now too lmao.

John
07-10-12, 07:39 PM
hmmm i would quite fancy a disco........

Stuart
07-10-12, 08:14 PM
The vibe I'm getting from Discos is that something of acceptable spec (eg toys) would be in the £10 realm in a year to 18 months time.... Much like a 2007 onwards 3/5 series I fancy which is just that little bit too far out of budget for now.

I hate you sooooo much John lmao. The only thing I'd do to an S4 Avant is sack off those minging wheels and get something less gash :) What is the recommended engine oil for the V8?

Jack

i would say get the bug out of your system first

i was considering a sti for a while , but thought no id be sensible and buy the bm insted , love the bm to bits but should of still bouhgt the sti and been a **** for 6 months at least and then traded against a bm

but 5 series beemers are getting so cheap now :)

Stuart
09-10-12, 03:21 PM
The 3's and 5's I want (post 2007) havent dropped enough yet lol, so a year tooling about in something silly will do the job.

lol i went for a 53 reg 530d , but fully loaded with every option from factory, nav, ipod, heated leather, auto lights and wiper, auto dim rear view, adaptive zennons etc etc with 101k for 6 grand , just turning 110k this week and will prob be good for another 200k lol

only thing needed to do is remove the swirl flaps and your good :)

Stuart
12-10-12, 05:59 PM
Yes I was looking at phaetons a few months ago, they aren't quite as cheap as that.... Well they are if you don't mind one on enterprise miles lol if they did an estate version I'd have one in a heartbeat, even a w12 or w10
