I'm thinking of getting a new car and I fancy turbo disel. Estate would be ideal but not sure on good points or bad points to the cars. Insignia estate looks so much nicer and interior is so much cleaner then then vec but if the car is known for stupid faults its a no go.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Have you considered a Signum?

My old man has had a Signum 3.0v6 diesel, vectra estate VXR and currently has a Insignia estate elite cdti 160.

All 3 are very good, insignia is lovely to drive but cost a fair bit more than a vec or signum. I am personally on the look out for a signum ctdi.

Had an insignia for a few weeks, wasnt the best on diesel and just didnt like the electronic handbrake. It will depreciate just as bad as a vectra too.Cracking looking motor though and good torque.

IF you do very low miles (less than 40 miles a day in 2 runs, ie 20miles each way) then the Insignia TD is a BAD move!!!

I'd not touch the 3.0 V6 Derv in the veccy/signum either as the liners can drop :(

I have had 2 vectras cdti 1.9 150bhp versions and they are great just check the swirl flaps on the inlet manifold on the early ones the bar falls off and causes them to stay shut/open, in the end you need a new inlet manifold,

i think the vectra is the better looking of the two

ive got a Insignia SRI cdti 160Nav and its a great car, got all the toys, sat nav, Leather seats etc etc. Its a relaxing drive and the electronic hand brake is something you get used too pretty quickly. Great boot size and good room for 4 adults. all in all id go for the Insignia

I have an Insignia Sport Tourer cdti 160 (which I have had since new in 2010 and done 60k in) and I much preferred my Vectra 1.9 cdti 150.

Very different to drive, and poor space inside compared to the Vectra. Also, worse on fuel and the engine seems more lazy.

Would love a passat but I can pick up a vec cheap but depending how much money is dependant on the insignia. Did think about a signum also. But don't seem to be that many around. So any engines I should stay away from. 1.9, 2.0 or 2.2. I'm not going for a 3l v6 at all.

I'd try to avoid the dti engines.

1.9 cdti 150 can be a pain with the swirl flaps on the inlet manifold, the dreaded DMF, and the egr valves tend to pack up a fair bit but when there running good they are good on fuel and pretty nippy also

My pal has a 1.9cdti 120 bit slow but doesn't have a DMF

Personally, well I love the1.9 130/150 estate passat B5.5's but there still high priced, an come with there own issues etc..
Out of your options I say vectra, but I would look for a signum as they look better imo
