Very well maintained Nova 1.4 SR. Low mileage, less than 75,000 miles.
I have decided to offer my Nova for sale, as unable to give it the attention this classic really deserves. So at the right price, I would like it to go to a Nova enthusiast to hopefully bring it up to scratch. Quite a rare opportunity to own an appreciating classic car for £975.
Also as a cheap fun ‘run around’ (Ins Group 7, and low tax, good MPG) it also offers good value for money (as so much work has been put into it over last few years)
Brief history :
I’m only the 2nd driver, it was bought new in Ramsey (Cambs), and by October 2004 (14 yrs) had done 39k miles by the lady owner, a family friend. Due to her ill-health, it was SORN’s for about 4 years (in garage) and passed on to me in 2008, and I am now reluctantly selling. So a good home required for this old friend, as I don’t have the time it deserves to bring it back to tip top bodywork condition, since my accident. (see below)
The car has been used daily by me since 2008, when we spent about 3 months bringing it back to excellent mechanical condition, after stored in her garage for about 4 years. (see parts replaced). Incidentally the 3 wheel bearings were failing due to moisture ingress, rather than wear and tear.
There are only 3 registered owners on are the V5 (ie lady, my Mum and me)
Incident :
Early this year I was cut up on a slip road on the M5 and sustained some frontal damage (slow speed impact). Lights shattered, Radiator broke plastic bracket, bonnet top lip creased. I temporary repaired damage in order to get car on road again (My Insurance Company was informed yet I submitted no claim, as not cost-effective, the car is not Cat D or C recorded).
The damage was frontal, bonnet and front grill, headlights (all replaced). I hand painted a red bonnet (see photos), on the basis of replacing with a new and then intended to further replace the 2 wings (as both original) as time allowed. The bumper surround and bumper support need replacing longer term. (Overall I estimated about £375 parts, using new body panels)
However, I don’t have the time now and although I keep it very well maintained mechanically, it does need that front end tidying up, it’s a car that has a lot of life still left in it. My lower asking price already reflects this fact.
Main points
The Road Tax runs until 30th Sep 2012. The MOT is valid until October 2013. Only 3 registered owners on V5 (ie lady, my Mum and me), with genuine 75k miles from new.
All key areas are solid, no filler in body, however recent minor welding (for MOT) on rear end sill and suspension rim, on NS and OS (see photos).
There is also rust and a hole on the bottom of the driver’s door. The rear arches have some rust on their lips however again not the usual rot ingress that you find on many Novas. Obviously the car is now nearly 22 years old so there are a few scratches and dents here & there however for 1990 the overall shell is still in good condition in the key ‘MOT’ areas. We have waxoyled since 2008, and kept further corrosion to a minimum. It does have the original front wings, which could now do with replacing, and a new bonnet. It still retains the original dealer plate on rear, original car mats, original windscreen (Note : this has a very small crack (MOT legal – see photo)). Music system, speakers are Pioneer, although no player unit will be installed
I want to be as accurate as possible, so have taken many photos, to give the prospective buyer a good look around (these are HERE) The car performs and handles great and could be a show car in the right hands with a little TLC, ie to remove all remaining corrosion. As we know the 1.4 SR as original is getting extremely rare now.

The car does have a standard SR interior fitted, except Leather Seats. No cassette/radio player fitted. Speakers will be left in place (Pioneer)
Non- smoker. No pets in car. Door cards and roof lining in very good condition. Very clean and very few marks. All gauges working. Additional LED Oil temperature gauge fitted. Odometer seems to get stuck/click occasionally.
Engine,Transmission,Brakes
The engine runs very smooth and starts first turn of the key, every time. K & N Filter. (we have original air intake). I now do about 6k – 7k miles p.a (mostly Motorway, social and work)

Head Gasket was replaced summer 2012 (it did not fail with oil/water cross contamination), as idling lumpy. Discovered gasket was breaking down between cylinders 3 and 4. New cam lifters/ followers were installed, rather than originals cleaned. Cylinder pressures taken this week are 170,165,160,160. A new clutch cable installed 2011 (originally thought the clutch was slipping), the current biting point is quite high (on original clutch as far as we know). We do have a replacement clutch, if full asking price offered. However original clutch appears fine.
Wheels &Tyres:
The car has a set of 4 Tigra Alloy 5 spokes 15”
• Tyres 185/55 15”
• Fronts Toyo Proxes (3mm and 7mm* tread) *had nail in one so replaced 2011
• Rears – Firestone TZ300 (5 mm tread on both)
The Nova has a set of 256mm brakes/calipers fitted from a Cavalier 2.0 16v
Suspension:
KYB standard suspension kit consisting of new shocks and springs (2010).
4 original mud flaps – (1 still has badge insert)
Exhaust: The car has a Sportex centre & backbox fitted .
Original set of steels wheels will be included, if full price obtained.
Items replaced with new in last 3 years or less
Both Driveshafts (we have originals) , Brake Hoses , Cam belt , Water pump , Handbrake cable, Tie rod ends, Lower Ball joints , OS front wheel bearing, both rear wheel bearings, Carb cleaned and new diaphragm kit, Brake Discs and pads, new Distributor, new exhaust. New springs & shocks. Thermostat. Cavalier Brake callipers, we all rebuilt , with new seals. Suspension parts hammerited as we changed parts. Over £1750 spent
Regular servicing (Oil change every 4k miles) + Gearbox oil changed , Brake fluid New Radiator (2012) and coolant changed.
