Check the actual 'eye' connections on the back of the starter. I've had this before because that muggins Simps did them up and he managed to spin one round to touch 2 terminals, if it's not doing that you'll have connected it up wrong somewhere.

pretty sure its not the eye as i swapped the starter for the one of the other engine and still have the same problem, must be the wiring how hould it be wired?

iirc there's only 2 terminals on the starter? so try swapping them, but I honestly can't remember exactly... that would have been about 2-3 years ago now!

Sparks mean there's a poor connection somewhere! Is the 13mm nut definately tight? The smaller spade connector (black/red wire is from the ignition switch)

Is the wiring sheathing exposed anywhere and earthing out?

I think he means the battery terminals are sparking, i.e somethings connected when it shouldn't be.

The main starter feed will have permanent 12v feed. Have you ripped all the spi loom out and swapped to a carb tank?

The wire to the starter also has a piggyback to the alternator check that's tight too.

Check the solenoid isn’t jammed in. To do this, connect the small black wire to the solenoid and leave the red batt +ve off. Turn the ignition and listen for a clicking. If there is no clicking the solenoid is not disengaging.
Try and rattle the solenoid with a spanner to see if it un-sticks.
