My mate is in conservation/land management and he hate the river cottage thing where hugh goes crayfishing. It's illegal etc as the uk species are endangered and folks don't just catch the wrong ones.

a bloke i know just knocked up a trap out of some old fencing wire & caught some in a local brook... he said they tasted ok...

i'm really not into eating large creepy crawly things......

I've eaten them... Taste good. As stu mentioend, there's two soecies; native smaller crayfish and the American blue larger crayfish. By law of you catch the American crayfish, you cannot put it back in the river etc.

When I was younger me and a mate used to use crablines. As we got older, we made all sorts of pods. We always put the native crayfish back.

I caught one earlier in the year in a river near me. Nasty little buggers here's a pic

Threw it back, technically it's a rod licence so if your not using a rod then why would you new one but best to clear it up before you get pulled up on it.

Whilst we are on the subject of fishing here's one I caught Friday night :)

nice to know there is carp still out there and not on dickheads dinner plates, me and my brother use to go to the canal in tottenham and rip out all the Eastern Europeans snag lines they had tied to trees and the (dont know the propper name) mini Pier type things

i know of blokes that have battered (excuse the pun lol) people taking river fish to eat

Crayfish above is a Signal Crayfish is it not? It's one of the American species which are taking over from the native ones.

I've been told it is actually illegal to return the Signal Crayfish to the water. CBA to google it to see if it's true.

Those American ones are all over the river lea, the kids in ware and Hertford pull them out by the bucket full and sell them to the local Indian £5 for 8 last time I asked. They just use a bit of bacon tied on to a bit of string and I am pretty sure they done need a license, but you do if you set up traps. As said illegal if you throw them back.
