View Full Version : Mk2 Nova Project - slow burner

As some will know I abandoned the a reg project due to the chassis resembling a banana on the offside front corner, and despite the shell being otherwise mint it wasnt worth the work for me. Obviously this caused me some disappointment and I found myself trawling ebay again for a new project.

This was found - and the auction duly won, miles away and not a clue what condition it was in - but it was a 2.0 SEH (non runner) with a few decent bits on so worth a go at the price. On winning the auction I paid by paypal and arranged for my friendly transporter guy to collect the following day.

On arrival I was encouraged to find the chav like slabs painted white had brand new uniroyal tyres but disappointed that the seats were junior versions. All was not lost as the transporter driver liked them so I removed them, and he bought them resulting in free collection!

So - the 2.0 8v is a non runner as the twin carbs were not included, the rear arches were shot and various other areas were undersealed over so although progress is slow - cutting and welding plates has been the way forward. The rear arch shown above came away in my hand so today I cut/pulled away the outer arch and inner and plated in then welded in one of the two new arches that came with the car. Photos tomorrow.

I have been collating parts, Astra GTE teardrops, white mk2 spoiler, new headlights, braided brake hoses, mint red mk2 SRI interior, redtop engine etc etc so the plan is to make it an SR (mk2) rep with the redtop in.

It now has a mk2 rear bumper too which strangely enough came to me on the mk1 5dr that I stripped.

Points to note from the above photos (which were the ebay ones when I bought it) - bent steering column, tatty engine bay, bumper hanging off, filler in rear arches and interesting wiring! No problem thoough as it will all be sorted!

Not done a redtop before so it will be a learning curve - more photos tomorrow.

Nice looking start dude. Hope you can get on with this one. Be nice to see another Nova about down here.

Was that the one forsale near me in Cheddar? Somerset?

I'm sure I seen it about few years back

Went for good price iirc

Yes it was Edd - very good price for the bits on it to be honest. For that reason I expected the shell to need work and it did.

Its not been on the road since 2010, and I havent a clue if that was with the 20SEH or 1.2 engine - its a 1.2 on loogbook but that will be changing before it goes anywhere.

Well, progress is indeed slow. The N/S rear arch is welded in, but I am lacking the motivation to get on with it as I hate bodywork.

However, over the weekend a stunning little Nova came up so I bought it.

Its had two previous owners, and has a full comprehensive history with every bill from new and every bit of correspondance - makes great reading. I like the colour too - cost extra when new as metallic! The nice thing is it is 110% original. Its certainly not mint but its very straight! The original dealer is no longer a Vauxhall main dealer but still maintained the car till now - quite an amazing feat!

I was told it had running issues when I bought it and indeed the 30 mile drive home was "interesting" - this was easily cured by replacing the distributor which was falling apart inside and also noticed there was a bad leak on the brake servo vacuum pipe which was the rubber sealing ring on the servo. Both issues sorted it runs perfect.

What to do with it now is the question! The white one remains as can be seen in one photo!

Gave it a wash and wax - scraping off the moss in the process. Looks better;

And slow progress on the white one;

Mk2s definately rot a lot worse that mk1s!! Replacement arch welded in - needs grinding down and filling...

Why bother with the white one when the new ones that clean

Good question - its likely Ill strip and scrap the white one as even though its had about 10 plates, and 1 arch repaired there is still loads and loads still to do!

And the white one is now being stripped ready to go to its new home. The 20SEH came out today and all I can say is I am glad I never drove the car with that engine in. The front mount was a standard rubber mount with two holes drilled in the top and then a spacer inserted to drop the front of the engine - this is home made with two manifold studs. One bolt was used on the standard Astra GTE front mount. The rear mount had no spacer and two bolts.

Lots of bits are here for the grey one - SR grille and bumper, rear spoiler, clocks, etc but for the time being its fun enough in standard form - I had forgotton how well a standard 1.2 drives!

Once the white one goes I will be starting rebuilding the red top I have had for a while and sourcing some engine mounts for it!

My neighbour has a nova loon in the same grey, really nice colour. Looks really clean too much better that mine atm.

Its very clean - probably other than the Antibes I had a few years ago its the straightest Nova I have had. Needs a couple of blisters doing, but other than that its totally solid.

I nearly bought an SR in this colour (or similar) a few years ago and always wished I bought it as I liked the colour!

Changed the wheels (and found the dead mouse in the o/s front brake caliper - no photos sadly);

Thanks guys.

I am not a fan of slabs, hence the eventual change to my favourites (teardrops)

I am undecided whether it is too high at the rear! Should be 60mm all round.
