Been spending ever spare second rebuilding the engine and car for a track day at Mallory at the start of October. Got a far old way to go... Whilst I'm stitch welding and plating the engine bay I was to to try and fit the TRS tow loops I have. As the standard tow eyes are sh!t to access.

Anyone fitted them before?! Trying to work out how to get them bolted in!?

Cheers
Chris

just fit it to a bumper mount, then cut a slot into the bumper...

just what is wrong with the original tow loop? unless is it rusty as feck, it is fine...

I don't run a bumper iron, so that's not an option.

Have you ever tried to clip a winch hook through the tow eye with a GTE bumper fitted?! Once you do get it on, it takes all the paint off the bumper.

No they don't. Nearly as stupid as hanging a toy from your towing eye!

Use a bit of seatbelt first

I purely want it as a functional item... The car doesn't get used on the road.

Seatbelt webbing through the tow eye? I have trs loops now, so would like to fit them as yet are red and obvious in the event the car is towed off track etc

Most people use a bolt with a massive washer on the original towing eye, seems a little pikey to me but seems to work.

I did mean on a track car, not a road car so not like a toy!

i have had to tow novas with gte type bumpers plenty of times.. i have a piece of 7mm blue rope doubled over in a loop...

you may not run a bumper iron, but you must still use the bumper mount in the chassis leg.. if the strap isn't long enough, fit a bit of flat bar so it sticks out enough

Need to have tow points for trackdays, so it is a purely functional fit for me!

I have solved the issue now, Paul, if you are interested fittign tow loops let me know and I'll send some pics. It's quite simple and doesn't clamp onto the toe eye.

why dont you chuck together a how to guide fella

Iain

Agreed. If there's a guide of how to do it without the original tow hook it means we can hang the toys off them as well as have a tow strap.

i wouldn't blame him for not doing a how to guide with some responses he got asking about it lol

I own 3, I must know best lol

I honestly dont have time for a how to atm, flat out sorting the car every evening, and now changed it slightly as I'm cutting the front panel off.

Basically slotted it above the tow hook measure the distance in (40mm), then marked it up underneath. Drilled through the crossmember gusset/brace then the chassis leg. Started with a 4mm, 7mm and 10mm. I then was goin to weld a plate on the bottom to strengthen it and bolt it down from above.

When I removed the rot in the crossmember, I planned to weld some tube inside to make it stronger, but will do this once the front end is replaced. Saying that, I feel the plate underneath would suffice.

This is where the plate would go

Forgot to add, the standard tow eye is still accessible. I'll use it when the bumper is off to load it on and off the trailer.

That looks pretty good, that way you can tow it on a fixed bar too should you need to. So you just slot the hole through the crossmember to poke it through?

Wondering if you could use a harness spreader plate on the bottom to spread the load rather than welding a plate on.

Just thinking out loud but could you use the vertical tie bar bracket mounting bolts or would the chassis leg be alot stronger than the cross member?

chimp007_uk
06-09-12, 09:09 AM
Iain; no, the hole isn't slotted. There's Clearance to drop the bolt down from above inside the chassis leg. As for te spreader plate, as long as its m10, it should be fine. You can weld though lazy...

Simon; have you seen my front crossmember, or most front cross members? When towing, you want all the load going through the chassis leg and that's the strongest part.

Yeah I did notice the big hole. I just wondered if it would be suitable being a suspension pick up point on the car. Thanks for clearing up the question though!

I've got mine bolted to the original tow eye and have cut a slit in my Gsi tow eye cover.

Purely to be a scene queen :d

Why can't you just use a snap clip thing with some webbing attached, then you can remove it...

Like this but stronger

Niche in the market? I could get Tina to make some!

I guess the main reason for them is fitting them where there isn't a towhook, rather than attaching them to an existing towhook, so a quick release isn't so useful.
