View Full Version : Oil temp gauge/sensor
This is something i've wanted to do for a while, whats the best way of fitting the sensor? Is there a spare hole in the pump i can use? Or is it best using a adaptor plate thingy?
Are cheap gauges ok or best avoid?
There's lots of spare threads on the engine you can use. Two oil gallery bungs and one on the back of the oil pump. Good thread on MIG somewhere but struggling to find it
My Stack one seems very nice and reliable and not hugely expensive.

The oil gallery is ok to use i believe for oil pressure.
I contacted SBD about this as i have mine in the sump asking if the temp in sump was much different to engine temp.
They advised me to leave it where it was & not to stick a temp sensor in a gallery blank.
I did think about the sump tbh, just drill a hole and some copper washers - job jobbed! But if theres some blanks then that might be easier. If you could find that thread Iain, i'll love you long time ;)

Obviously the one Martin is going to be the easiest to install, any idea where I can get one from? Or does anyone know what thread size an XE sump plug is?
What engine is it for? Cant you just replace the current sender for the proper Bosch one?
I don't like the idea of a sump sensor, surely it makes more sense to see what temperature the oil is when it gets into the gallery after going through the cooler etc as that's what is feeding your engine.

I'd not bother with a temp gauge at all to be honest... its just a worry gauge and in the sump its next to useless.

Hello Martin,
You should NOT fit the oil temp sender in the gallery, it will restrict/block the oil supply, also this will give an inaccurate reading as it will pick up temp from the block, not just the oil.
In your wet sump application you should either drill the sump plug out and fit the sender up the centre, or have a threaded boss welded to the sump pan below the oil level.

Upto you Chris but according to SBD, who should know most things regarding an XE, do not put the temp sensor in gallery & the sump is fine.
I took SBD's advise & left it in the sump :)

I can see how some of the larger sensors could block the oil gallery, having taken a look at the size of yours in the link Mazz put up.
I reckon the hole I used on the back of the oil pump is still ideal for this. No oil flow to obstruct (someone correct me if I'm wrong!) and hopefully less heat soak from the block?
I would tend to not argue with SBD tho lol
might not be the best but im using one of these in the normal place for the oil pressure switch.

Its a sump plug sender, so has the correct threads (m14 * 1.5) so even if its no good in the sump (2 mins to swop) its will fit in one the gallery holes without sticking in too far :) win/win?
How will you know it's no good in the sump? Buy two and have two gauges to compare? lol
