Tried to fit my GAZ rear coilovers onto my 2dr loon but they didn't fit!

I knew they might not, so what are the options really?

How don't they fit dude?

Bolted up the top fine, then couldnt line them up with the bottom mount. The spring is solid up against the inner arch.

Either make room with a hammer or fit turrets

Iain

See what they're like at running height (bit more clearance than when jacked up), then hammer where they hit.

Ok I will give them another go and take it off the jack. Then get a big lump hammer out!!!

scott.parker

Raise the beam with a jack and they will line up better dude

So general concensous is they should fit or need some slight adjustment with a hammer.

scott.parker

Do not hammer mate just raise the beam up with a jack into near the ride hight position an they should be fine, might be tight but should fit without hammering I once made that error on my old gsi lol

Cheers Scott! Hope your correct as they really didn't look like they would fit :wtf:

I had loads of room on my loon compared to my other novas

If you do have to hammer inner arch make sure the seams are stitch welded first otherwise the spot welds might split

Which od springs do you have? 2.2 or 1.9inch?

Id hammer back, but maybe cutting a slit in the metal, then weld it back together.

Measured the springs and they are 2.5" diameter. Am I better off sourcing some different springs before fitting them?

All the GAZ rear coilies I've had in the past were 1.9"

paul080803

They are 2.5 OD, look like 1.9 ID

id jack car up stick it on axle stands not on the rear beam then using the jack, jack the rear beam till they line up pal

You want the 1.9OD ones. You'll have lots of probs with the wider ones.

1.9" ID is the normal rear spring Benn (i.e. GHA kit we have)

I can't see a 1.9OD spring fitting the bOdy of the shock? That would be approx 1.3ID??

Iain

They're the right springs don't worry about that.

Thanks

I was given 2 setsof springs for the rear. What is the logic behind a longer spring?

Mieran

there is no such thing as 1.9" OD

When you talk about springs everyone deals in ID

Benn

Sorry i must be confusing ID and OD then. Thought it was OD was the measured one.

Would I be better running a seperate spring and shock on the rear (GAZ adjustable shock) or the GAZ rear coilovers I already have?

Iain
07-09-12, 10:47 AM
Well if you can't get them to fit, the separate setup would probably be best! Wonder if you could keep them for shocks only and just fit separate pigtail springs

paul080803

TBH I havent had a chance to try the coilovers again to see if they fit. A set of GAZ adjustable rear shocks have come up for sale very local to me, and I already have rear springs so was wondering if this would be as good/better/worse than going with the coilovers.

It is a track car first, but will be road legal although rarely used on the road.

How many PNGer's does it take to change GAZ coilovers? lol

Well I did try again, with the advice from here and they fit so pleased with that!!! Cheers for the help.

It is very close on the o/s so will prob tap the arch in with the hammer.

But I am not sure about the top, how to arrange the parts??

I went with this option, although they need to come off to remove the original springs and underseal the arches so I could change it if I got it wrong!!!

Looks about right, give it a good beating.

You've fitted the topmount correctly too, sits in the seat. It's a little worrying that it can dislodge when jacked up if your springs dislocate, I think I glued mine to the platform/washer on the strut

Iain, it is worrying. I think I will glue it in as well. Cheers.

Dude in the last pic is wrong, how you had its right first time so the wight is pushing up onto them, as if the cars wight comes onto that they will dislodge and be hitting the underside of the platform that the rubber bush is on and they could possibly work loose and fall out, but if you loose the old springs get sat on it's ass it should clear fine IMO, there alway quite tight as coilovers were never really mean to fitted to these cars anyway lol

Benn

The welding its had doesn't help the fitting. I'd hammer them back/cut and reshape.

I don't get what you mean, Iain says it is fitted correctly? Are you talking about the black disc (top mount) for spring? I have fitted it under the lowest fixed disc on the shock body so the spring is pushing it up?

Patch at the bottom of the inner arch... The spring can catch when its the std panel. Extra metal on top gives less clearance.

Cheers Benn, I can see it now. Best get the lump hammer out

(yes I know I should cut it out and do it properly, but I won't)
