Sounds like your oil pressure switch!
your guage wont work if its not connected thats all!
I am missing 1 wire from it, my guage is always reading full, does the other connection need to be earthed?

If you mean a spade connector it'll be oil sensor/pressure switch (behind cam belt area)

i got a feeling some switches are on of and some for a gauge. if you have on/off style you dont use both wires so u have 1 hanging off
