How quickly should the oil light go out on the dash after start up ?

On my 1300 this can been a couple minutes

Is this ok ? Or could I have some sort of problem ?

All my other nova's its only stayed on for seconds

The sender is new as is the oil pump

Any help would been great

sounds like your oil could be to thick? what grade oil do you have in it? and once it goes out does it stay out?

I should go out right away. Pressure releief valve all free to move?

Couple of minutes sounds quite worrying as the standard switch is pretty low PSI to switch isn't it? Does it only stay on during idle or go out if you rev it?

Edd

Its got 10 40w oil in it

Releife valve ? That the big nut on the front of the pump ?

It won't go out at all for a few mins, will after that if I rev it

Yesterday I let it run until it went out was abour 4/5 mins

Thats a bit worrying! Should go out after a couple of seconds tops! Yeh, the PRV is the big nut on the front. You'll get a bit of oil leak out, but not loads.

Thats the valve that sticks.

Edd

How do I know if its sticking or not ?

Edd, did you buy an original GM oil twin sender? Only reason I ask is a couple of years ago a bought a new one off eBay (non GM) and the connectors were the wrong way and the earth one kept losing contact.
I got a second hand one and it solved my similar symptoms.

The sender is a new genuine one mate

I do have another old genuine one I could try

Worth a try for a quicky.

Undo the big nut, pull out the bung and spring then you should be able to pull out the piston (see pic above) inspect for scores burrs etc. If OK then replace. If its tricky to get out the could indicate there is some swarf jamming it open.

Thanks for the replies

I will change the sender first then clean the valve, its may have something in it being a fresh engine

Be careful. It has a spring behind the nut so it will pop. Could be sticking closed (think that's the right way) Take it out, check for it's up there and scoring on the valve. Give it a clean and polish if it needs it and re fit.

If its scored, for what little they cost, just bang a new un in

As said, should go out in less than a second!

If its a fresh engine, the pick-up may have picked up some cr*p and its blocking it. Its unlikely to be the sender, as it sounds consistent and its a gen item and they rarely break...

I would drop the oil, check teh relief valve and put fresh oil in (after checking for swarf etc)

Should the valve like in the above pic come out easily ? As mine seems to be jammed in there

Andy

Thats ya problem then

Edd

:(

I'm hoping that its not a oil pump off job

Thing is when I get it out how do I prevent it from doing it again?

You can buy an SBD nylon one to prevent this problem.

Edd

I have got it out now

It has some very very light marks on it, not sure if that's a problem or not

Mmm, thats odd. That was a new genuine oil pump fitted on the engine rebuild. Must have picked up some sh t from somewhere.

Edd

Tbh Rich I'm not 100% convinced that is the problem, but since the light has stayed on it has sounded tappy on start up, plus never had the problem before

Won't know until I start it up next which won't be till next week now

I don't really want to buy a SBD one as I'd rather just get it working as it should

Not sure if to get a new genuine one tho? Or just refit the one I have

It has a few very very very light marks

Thinking I'm might need to check the pick up pipe as Will says?

Edd is the light on at idle all the time? or just when you start and dont touch the throttle?

Edd
21-08-12, 09:14 PM
Just when I start it up and don't touch the throttle John, it's never come on whilst out on the road

If I blip the throttle for the first few minutes it stays on, after 2/3 if blip it goes out, not touching it it will take 4/5 minutes to go out on it's own

John
21-08-12, 09:16 PM
Ok i see, i'd never leave it idling with the light on if at all possible, blip the throttle to get it off asap. Has it been using any oil? do you have your pressure gauge wired in? if so, what's it doing when the lights on?

Edd
21-08-12, 09:23 PM
It's not used any oil, but I've only done 300 miles, plus I've changed oil in that time as well

Pressure gauge is low when the light is on, takes along time to rise after starting, bout half way when driving and on max when using slot of revs

I'm hoping no damage has been done, I don't want to drive it until I get to the bottom of it tbh

John

I'd whip the sump of and check the pick up pipe/strainer for debris too. I once had a 1.3 with the oil pressure light at idle, but it picked up when revved, was due to crap in the pick up.

Edd

Cheers for the advice John, got a spare sump gasket so will take it off and see what's there

Novasport
21-08-12, 09:49 PM
As above, you need to check the pickup pipe. It was a new sump iirc

Edd

back in bits again lol

Andy

Was gasket paste used on the build?

i cleaned mine with 2000 gritt lol

thats in my xe tho

You would have to take sump off/drain oil anyway tbh - on a fresh build, you will always get excess swarf. Thats why you have to change the oil so often!

The relief valve in my pump was cracked...!
I had a spare that was scored slightly, took some 2.5k grit paper to it and it's fine now.
