View Full Version : Track tyres?!
is it safe to run proper track tyres such as toyo 888s without a dry or baffled sump?

From personal experience, I run Advan AO-32R soft compound and at my last track day @ Bedford, I lost oil pressure coming out of a long corner onto the back straight. Coasted and oil pressure picked up. Got back to pits, turned the engine off checked everything over, no obvious leaks etc, lots of oil in the sump. Started it up and knock, knock, knock...
I haven't got the sump off yet, but that'll be done in the next couple of weeks when I get the engine out. Got a new one to go back in, that I've fitted a semi-baffled sump to.
Just to add, it still could happen on standard tyres, hard cornering at high RPM... It doesn't take much!
Alot of people don't, but I've had a problem so attempted to avoid it in the future.
Assume it would depend on engine and sump/standard baffle design? I've not suffered on my XE with old semi slicks but they're probably not putting the same forces through as nice new R888s or better.
Ok thanks, think il take sump off my xe and have a look see if I can fit some baffles in just to be safe! Chimp did u make ur own baffled sump?been looking on the web to try find someone that makes them but can't find anyone,I heard that sbd made them but couldn't find any info.
Do proper track tyres really make a lot of difference, iv never run them before only run Toyo T1rs in the past.any idea of lap time differences?
Proper tyres make the world of difference on track, I tried T1Rs in the dry and it just destroyed them as they got far too hot.

As per Iain's comments, my track tyres did a whole day and are still fine. Grip is phonominal once warm lol.
I didn't baffle mine, and I would class it as part baffled, it's bee plated vertically front to back with a small gap underneath to allow some oil flow back to the pickup.
Load sof pics and designs online, find someone who can tig ;) or maybe try something like the second pic. My sump is pretty primative in comparisson to these...
