this is the decision my brother is trying to make
what one would you go for, i know the evos can rust but is that just in import ones?
mpg isnt a real worry he has his punto as a daily so this will just be his weekend car to cane about in (and more then likely lose his licence lol)
when we talk about it we both agree there are loads of scoobys knocking about but is there a reason for that, other then them being cheaper
he has 10k budget to play with

EVO's are a better country lane car but cost more to run Subaru are a better all round car and cheaper to run. If its just out and out blast car EVO if you want to use it like a daily than Subaru.

I'd go for the evo, scoobys are too common, and personally I prefer the look of the evo!
Of the two, evo. But I don't really like Imprezas.
£10k would see you with an 8 or well kept 7. As with most things jap, don't blow your entire budget on the car as you'll need to retain some for maintenance. A decent importer should also have de-rusted and undersealed the car as part of the import process (most JDM cars don't bother with it as rust never seems to be an issue over there lol), whilst anything UKDM will be undersealed from factory its probably been exposed to ~10 years of UK roads. My Celica is UK and undersealed... and rusty lol
Alternatively what about a GTR? RX7? Heck, get an ST205 and spend the remaining £7k on making it munch Evos :d

Theres a couple of 51 reg RX7;s for sale at various importers at the minute. If you ever plan on buying an RX7, check carefully at its mechanical condition. And then cheack again.
A set of new rotor tips will set you back around £1400 on there own. A turbo pack from Mazda is about £2.5k also. Half & full port engines run lower compression then a non ported motor so bear that in mind. Suspension components etc are all very expensive as there all RJ'd double wishbone gubbins. Power commanders are also hella expensive (£600++).
Other then that a standard ish one will mince most top end cars when it comes to outright top speed.
But to answer the OP, I wouldnt bother with either personally lol both of them are magnets for car key burglarys & ram raiders.

Short of putting a lot of money into it, your practically limited to new age Evoloutions, Imprezas, Nissan 350GT's OR Mercedes CL600's (<Mega stretching a 10k budget for a 500hp car!). As standard I wouldnt say there stupid fast mind (Evos & Imprezas I mean :/ )
The biggest problem youve got is your looking at cars around the wrong era. Late 90's Jap cars are some of the fastest things you can get now with £10k. (Modified ones that is).
Example A = http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MR2-Rev3-GTS-Turbo-500bhp-/230834112826?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item35bec9093a
Or this maybe.... although not Jap.

With 10k i'd be looking to build something epic myself, but failing that i'd have a silly quick GC8

It'll only the be same as owning an Evo/Impreza/Supra/RX7/Skyline etc etc. Expect 18mpg if your lucky. 13 or less when you plant it. £300+ odd for a set of discs & pads, £500++ for sets of tyres etc etc.
i know its old but supra ??
Standard Supra Twin Turbo with a manual box would blow £10k for a clean one with ease. I know, Ive looked. As im the exact same situation but with a slightly smaller budget.

If its just a toy why not something a bit older that's more likely to hold its money better? I would be looking at sierra / escort cosworths ( assuming 10-12k would still buy clean examples?)
Just because its newer doesn't mean it's any more unlikely to go t'its up
Evo. Dont really like the look of subaru.
I'd only be gunning for a 'newer' car for a nicer interior and toys.... given the Subarus and Evos have an 80's level of interior trim and toys no matter what age you get one, it shouldnt matter.
Standard Supra Twin Turbo with a manual box would blow £10k for a clean one with ease. I know, Ive looked. As im the exact same situation but with a slightly smaller budget.
UK spec TT manual would be more in the £15k range, although you could probably get an import for under 10. Don't be put off by auto though, afaik the autobox is slightly faster to 60 lol
Servicing wouldn't be THAT bad though - dealer would be mental but there's a gazillion specialists out there and a large range of parts suppliers. Reliable, pretty easy to tune, overnight parts from Japan on your tab at Harry's, etc. Still look 'fresh' IMO. Get an import and it will be cheaper with lower mileage but less power and not as many extras.
Only thing that would put me off the Supra is its more a GT car than a nimble racer, but will still bend the speedo in under 5 seconds. Maybe also look at Soarers or if you want newer maybe the Lexus SC range.

right had a talk with him and he is now going here sometime this week, for a look at some of the older jap cars
http://www.paulbrowncars.co.uk/
his main reason for the age stipulation was overall condition of the car, he wants to avoid any cars with scratches or blemishes on the paint work
so he wants to be a GJOB lol
A new car could have a worse condition paint job than an old one. ALWAYS buy on the condition of the car, not the age/service history that might be there.
Unless you are after a specific car that only came out in XYZ years.

we just had a chat, about the whole people braking in to get the keys and he said him nd a work mate already had that conversation (sad really that you have to think about things like that when buying a motor) and he said the keys are being kept upstairs under his pillow every night if they want them there have to work for it ;) he is also getting a steering wheel lock a good alarm/tracker with a hidden immobilizer button, we was also talking about the hijack immobilizers my uncle had one in his 450 hp cossy, it lets the car jackers get down the roada bit, but then the car cuts out
I had that keys chat with someone once. His view point was that it's only a car and it's insured, let the scrotes break in, find the keys with ease and piss off with the car. As opposed to ransacking the house, endangering him, his mrs and the kids.
I prefer his view point than that of sitting on they keys to a piece of metal.

Probably a lot more sensible way to go, especially if you've family in the house, as most people wouldn't be in the best shape to fight off intruders at 3 in the morning, in the dark, in your power ranger pyjamas..... Unless said intruders would give me ten minutes to wake up properly and have a smoke and a cup of tea, I think I'd be better off in bed.
Edit- you'd probably end up in the sh it for beating a burglar senseless anyway.

i can honestly say i would rather be sat in a hospital then allowing some one to take my property with out fighting for it, I had to grow up in a area where i was mugged and robbed as kids every other day, because we was the only white guys that lived there, the day we started fighting back it stopped, we all have the right to defend are selfs and are property, i would do what ever i wanted to them and just deal with the consequences after, what will be will be.

TJ that is a crazy attitude to have!
I can only presume you dont have children or a family that love you? Because if you did then you would rather just let a car go so that you will still be there the next day for your family than risking getting stabbed/shot or beaten to death.
Although at least when your family attend your funeral or visit you in hosipital they will be happy with the thought that your car is still on the driveway!

If you are willing to risk your life, I trust you dont bother having TPFT or Fully Comp insurance on car/house/stuff as there is no point in paying the extra.
If you have TPFT or FC then really your statement holds no water as you arent willing to risk life and limb for mere possessions.

They are 4WD. And bloody fast an all.
EDIT: Should mention not permenant 4WD though (atleast I dont think so anyway?).

My composite cell leader at work had one (sold it for a hawkeye impreza which he crashed lol) everytime I mention his old Subaru hes says get an MPS instead as there "better" lol
Can get a clean one now for a right decent price too! Old mans car that goes like a rocket ship FTW. No scene tax, no over priced insurance, no waking to a knife weilding TWOC'er at 2am either! Id love to get one if they did more then 400ish miles to a tank of fuel :(
Bugger, they don't come in fun or 4wd in the newer shape :(

Don't forget some evos have a 4k service interval and gearboxes don't last long if you launch them
4k service is the norm for a jap turbo lol
Has this been stolen yet then? lol
