is there anyone on here that made the same mistake as me when soldering?:roll:

i was trying to heat up the solder on the iron and drip it onto the wire, i know think that maybe i should not bother with the restoration of my car because i'm an idiot.:wtf::wtf::tard::tard::tard:

but one whole roll of solder, alot of anger and a youtube video later and i now get it....:thumb::thumb:lollol

jumping with two feet and all that

i'm sure others could add there failures.....

drip it onto some wire? do people not get shown the very basics of soldering anymore lol

i'll get there in the end

Nothing wrong with "coating" wires before soldering, Makes the job so much easier.

However I do use a solder bath to do this rather than dripping it on.....

You mean tinning? and no theres not, but you do need to heat the wire up to, its not a case of allowing solder to fall onto the wire lol

It's easy done, best to pull off a piece of solder it's easier to work with it that way mate, not as bad as me a few years ago, I managed to drip a big bit of molten solder on my hand, it left a nice big scare on it flol

Have a go at welding too and let us know how you get on :) :thumb:

welding will be a giggle to watch after this description of soldering.
I was never taught to solder in school/college, even though I did electronics courses... I guess its just one of those skills that people assume you can do.

And to add fuel to this fire, NEVER solder wires that are used in a car. (I have on occasion but thats a 'get us out of the crap' fix rather than a proper crimped joint)

Last time I had a go I melted through the power cable for the iron, I was banned by Mrs Hobbit after that. :(

What's the reason for not soldering wires used in cars? I have never heard that before and worried as I have soldered a few bits of wiring on the car :S

The main reason is the solder wicks up the wire (no matter how much people protest it doesn't) and causes a point of stress where under vibrations the wire can fatigue and fail.

Many will state its never happened etc blah blah. Crimps FTW

Agreed, crimps only. Warranty repairs at work are crimp only.

twist and tape ftw

/\ this if done properly if not crimp, soldering wires ( other than PCB/electronics) is a thing of the past

Crimps and heatshrink FTW

I think in school we had one lesson, i was quite a natural and had the pleasure of laughing at others that had made a complete mess of the printed circuit boards with holes in them, they only asked us to solder an led to a switch and battery connector, its not like they asked us to solder a 24 pin pic chip lol

twist and heatshrink is what i do, just remember to put the heatshrink on 1st, i forget every time

so soldering my clocks in was actually the wrong thing to do!!!

24 hours 2 facepalm moments

Stuart - my welding is poor at the moment but i am practising - this is why i felt such a moron with soldering
