Wtf is going on with these? Couple of thousand road miles, several trackdays after fitting my Ferrodo DS2500s...

Had that in my VXR but they fell out in bits, they had enough I suppose with the heat of hard braking.

Mike
06-08-12, 10:27 PM
Overheating.

EBC Greenstuff used to do this back in the day until they changed there compounds.

yer ive had this before on several of my road cars, its a bad case of over inthusiastic driving lol

mowgli

looks like you were driving it properly for a bit iain.

buy some higher spec pads

Stuart
06-08-12, 11:04 PM
Badly bedded in, then abused.

mowgli
06-08-12, 11:06 PM
well worn hgv pads look like the above pic....

methinks iain is learning that he needs 2 sets of brakes.... day to day ones & track ones....

for how long it takes to swap a set over, i think its worth it

Stuart
06-08-12, 11:14 PM
Or get decent track ones that will cope fine with day to day stopping.

Mintex 1155 or carbon Loraine cl5+'s will do that job well.

Iain

Trying to avoid the two sets of stuff for track and road Mowgli, I know it's probably the right way forward but the moment I start doing that I'll have half a day of trackday prep to do.

I took M1144s off as they got immense brake fade after 6 laps of Donington, however they didn't look like the above and felt a lot sharper from cold. Whether some ducting and 1144s would be suitable? Or would 1155s negate the need for ducting?

Stuart
07-08-12, 09:58 AM
1144's are great for 'keen' use but once on track they suffer badly.
1155's fix that issue and last 3 times longer lol

and CL5+'s are absolutely savage from what I've heard of them from Stu :d

Iain
07-08-12, 11:08 AM
Yeah looking into them now actually, might just have to cough up the cash and get them

Mazz
07-08-12, 11:54 AM
What are the prices of the 1155's and CL5?

Iain
07-08-12, 12:09 PM
M1155s £96
CL5+s £146.

M1155s £96
CL5+s £146.

What Vectra's were fitted with 256mm brakes? as on ebay they're £57 posted.

Stuart

Not the most savage pad I've used, but they are epic! :) plus you can leave the dust for a year and it just wipes off without wrecking the wheels lol
PFB97's were the most savage pad I've tried, properly evil dust/disk material on the rims but you would face plant the windscreen if you werent careful :D

Iain
07-08-12, 01:41 PM
Didn't think Vectras shared the same calipers? Astra, Cav, Calibra early/mid 90s? They're all nearing £100 from what I've seen. Screw it I'm ordering the CL5s lol

Edd

M1155s £96
CL5+s £146.

Fcuk those prices lol you won the lottery or something ?

Iain

Yeah I have. PM me your account and sort code and I'll share the wealth.

Less braking / win

Stuart
07-08-12, 03:00 PM
I class that as cheap for decent brake pads.
Use the discs as the cheap and nasty £20 each consumer part.

John

4 stud vectra b's were 256.

Astra g is a completely different shape pad though Scott :)

Iain, do you also have any issues when your doing your track days with your brake fluid? Does it boil over at all??

Mike
07-08-12, 07:36 PM
Knew I shouldnt have tempted fait & read this thread yesterday.... the pads on my daily decided to fall to peices driving to work this morning :/ properly funked now after driving home this evening :(

Iain
07-08-12, 07:49 PM
Southie no problems with the fluid at all it's been perfect. No sponginess or temperature problems at all.

In fact despite the state of those pads they never suffered from brake fade stamping on them on the quicker circuits!

MARTIN KELSON
07-08-12, 08:16 PM
I use the CL5 pads and cant fault them.

If you use a 4 pot caliper like WilWood, Hi-Spec etc then a pad change is pull a pin out & slide pads then its feasable to have road / track pads as its a 10 minute job.

Maybe when your feeling flush then new calipers may be an option?

mowgli
07-08-12, 09:20 PM
iain, if you liked the way these brakes worked, then just work on the mileage they lasted & keep buying them.. remember, you do drive it fast....

Paul
07-08-12, 10:43 PM
what brakes are you using (caliper) ive got 1155 on calibra turbo calipers and theyre superb.

Iain
08-08-12, 08:32 AM
Martin yeah nice calipers will be on the list for the far future, not possible at the moment though! I have those HiSpec spacers if I ever find a cheap disc to try them with if I want to add a bit more braking.

Mowgli I did like the way they worked but I fancy experimenting a bit - bought a set of CL5+s to try on it!

Paul, just the 256mm ATE calipers.

Will update my WIP with how I get on with the CLs, cheers all.

Stuart
08-08-12, 09:15 AM
Have you got new discs to go with? I highly recommend new discs, even £20 each specials.

Iain
08-08-12, 09:20 AM
Discs are pretty much as new, don't think I fitted them that long ago. Must not have checked the pad condition at the time or they're crumbled since then :tard:

Stuart
08-08-12, 09:34 AM
hmmmm, you need to bed the CL's in then... usually you dont need to follow a bedding in procedure.

Iain
08-08-12, 09:45 AM
Brake from 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 with increasing force and don't come to a halt with them on?

Stuart
08-08-12, 09:49 AM
id skip the 10 and 20 step.

a few 30-5's then some 60-5's and then a couple of balls out banzai stops. Done.

Just bear in mind these are sintered metallic pads so they will dump all their heat into the brake calliper/fluid, so ensure that is in new condition.

Iain
08-08-12, 03:37 PM
Cheers for the heads up, I'll inspect the calipers but they do appear in good condition and the fluid is a year or so old

pikey1986
08-08-12, 04:43 PM
for the sake of 10mins bleeding the system id renew(sp) the fluid

John
08-08-12, 05:47 PM
better fluid.

Iain
08-08-12, 05:51 PM
What's better than what I've got in it?

I'm not replacing stuff for fun

Stuart
08-08-12, 07:06 PM
Well, year ld fluid that's taken a pounding won't do you any favours.

I use dot 5.1 oem Mintex fluid... £3/litre is cheap as chips :)

nova ian
08-08-12, 07:10 PM
Hey biiiig spender! lol

Don't think you should need different fluid, refresh maybe but wouldn't think you'd need a better fluid. You know it serves the radical well and youve had first hand experience of the braking abuse that gets! lol.

Look forward to your conclusion on these fancy new one :)

Well been let down by the supplier of CLs again, perfectly happy to take the order and not tell you that it'll be 6 weeks before they can get some from France! Also been attempting to get some M1155s and they're all special order taking about 6 weeks. So I can replace with another set of DS2500s or try out some from the EBC range, time's ticking till my trackday though!

Mieran

I highly rate ATE super racing blue fluid, never had any fade on track with it and I was hammering the brakes a lot!

Euro car parts sell it

Edit: where are you getting DS2500s from? I want a set.

Stuart
15-08-12, 11:52 AM
ATE superblue is great, but it stains the lines making future bleeding a total pain in the ass :(

Try contacting Kam Racing, they do french cars but have a good contact with CL in France, so they might be able to get some in.
For 1155's try talking to QuestMead, their site says they dont deal with the public, they do. Its just to put off muppets.

Iain
15-08-12, 12:12 PM
I'm using ATE super blue fluid already. Kam Racing were the guys who let me down! I'll try QuestMead tho cheers. DS2500s will be from Camskill if I get them

Mieran
15-08-12, 12:22 PM
How much are they on camskil? Got a link?
