Hi i thought id take a bit of time to start a project thread as ive been on hear a few years now and cant really say ive shown anyone my baby ;) plus ive had a couple of requests for pics particually since buying the redtop engine for it so here goes the car is by no means standard and wasnt when i bought it so thought id carry on with the modified theme rather than standard.
im pretty happy with the looks so probably wont be changing much on that front maybe gsi stickers or something like that but nowt drastic.
it has colour coded gsi bumpers and sidskirts, astra gsi (i think :S lol) bonnet vents, and is painted in honda type r black and has 15" softstar alloys, thats about it exterior wise,
interior wise i removed the red sri interior after the drivers seat collapsed and replaced it all with gsi items from a gsi i bought then decided it was too much work for me so sold to a mate (sorry daz your gonna hate me for that one before long lol).
the engine is standard apart from the full stainless exhaust system. im going to try and put some pics up over the coming weeks but bare with me im not exactly great at uploading pics and i have hundreds so will have to sort through them.
as for the engine ive stripped it down and have bought all the parts ready for rebuilding it, i need to get the rocker cover painted yet, and then start getting into stripping the car ready for it. it will probably be a job thats going to take time because im doing bits in my dinner hours and at weekend so not expecting it to be done any time soon so bare with me, hopefully it will be worth it when it is done.

clemo
28-07-12, 05:02 PM
cheers guys yeah theres a few little detail things that are needed like the door handles and surround because the gsi ones were cracked so stuck with sri ones for now, the sun visors are still the red ones too, and the leather look bit of trim that goes across the top of the door card was all cracked too but i quite like the look of the black painted bit so not sure about wether to get them or not, the engine bay needs spraying coz its still red from when it used to be a red car but the engine conversion should give me chance to get that sorted

I've got the day off work today so I've been making a start on polishing up all the bits and bobs to put back on it. It all seems to be coming together at once after taking ages to get it started. Think the mods required to strengthen the chassis etc might slow it down a bit tho lol

latest update, engine is finally out dash out next weekend so not to et fire to anything when welding the bulk head and then to strengthen and generally tidy everything up before fitting the engine, cant make my mind up whether to get a new lower front panel as theres bits that have gone rusty and crumbly or wheter to plate the bad bits as most of it is sound. also does anyone know if you can by pre cut inner arches on the front (the bit which acts as a splash gaurd where a plastic liner would be on a modern car) as theyre pretty rotten on,
or is it going to be a case of making my own template then cutting some tin to shape?

Cheers mate, I haven't had chance to do a lot on it this weekend I got wat was left of the engine out yesterday but then had to put all the suspension back together so that I could push it out off the ramp ready for Monday, usually I'd do a bit and finish it off Sunday but I've been Silverstone today. Shame the gsi project has got to end :( it was starting to look like an expensive job to sort tho. And my dad has already text saying its 32 degrees and bright sun shine, bloody GIT!!! Lol

clemo
09-09-12, 03:19 PM
well i was hoping to make a start on strengthening the front end this weekend but never got round to it in the end but did get quite a lot done really so still happy with the progress. i removed all the suspension components except for the rear shockers as im going to put rsx ones back on when i can get find a replacement because one of them knocks like a droplink type knock which used to drive me mad so i took them off and put the standard ones back on tempory.

every thing else was removed tho and then the old worn bushes were removed from everything and the arms and axle etc were painted black including the flakey old purple springs, i welded the strengthening plates to the lower arms and then painted the whole lot. while everything was off the back i gave the underside of the body and chassis a coat of paint which when the paint has properly dried i will wax oil as well. then i left everything to dry over night and went back this morning to fit the new poly bushes and bolt everything back on re greasing the handbrake cable when i put it back on as even tho its less than 12 months old has gone rusty.

next week i think i will paint the middle section and finally try to make a start on the strengthening plates, might need a hand with the alternator mod soon, mentioning no names (wink wink, nudge nudge) lol.

anyway here comes the pics in a min.

well this is what ive been getting up to today, ive ripped the dash and front carpet sorted out and removed the ecu wiring ready for the new loom, and finally made a start on the strengthening plates, doing the tie bar mounts first, as you can see im not the best welder in the world but i suppose as long as it does the job it doesnt really matter as you cant see it anyway when its all back together. p.s the hammerite is just to stop the plates and weld rusting up as its sat outside most of the week. going to spraay it all properly when all of the bay is sorted

No update this weekend, thought I'd make the most of the sunny Saturday as its probably gonna be the last of the year. I have painted the brake servo as it was rusty and cleaned and polished the bracket that bolts it to the car but that's all for this week

i wasnt going to add an update this week as ive not really got a lot done on it but have been asked by a couple of friends where the weekly update is so here we go. re-painted the gearbox as i did have it painted silver but with the theme pretty much being black and white ive decided to paint it black now with the linkage and sump pan in white. i also had the same thought with the heatshields as i had painted them silver originally and then i did a little bit more painting on the underside which is near enough ready to be stone chip gaurd sprayed and then wax oiled. then the back and middle sections can start going back together over the next couple of weeks.

Cheers daz, youll be supprised how much welding is still to do tho lol, theres the stich welding to do on the bulk head and seams etc then theres the alternator mod which is the main bit id like you to do as i dont feel confidant enough on that one and then theres the 2 plates that go around the fron chassis leg where the engine and gearbox mounting brackets are.

Thanks david i just hope it looks as good when its all in the car and together.

few more bits and bobs this week after takking a couple of weeks off the project for topgear live and blackpool trips etc. exhaust heatshields and exhaust rubbers back on rear bumper back on, and the 2 front chassis leg strengthening plates welded in and filled over the weld to blend it in better, its not fully sanded yet but have put a quick coat of cheap primer on the keep the rain off the bare metal.

the nova is finally going off tomorrow to get the rest of the welding done, ive been looking at a few peoples projects on here and there seems to be differing opinions on what is the best chassis mod for the alternator but ive decided to go down the same route as WILL F' s silver gsi as im thinking the more clearance the better and will help when changing belts etc, so had a bloke in yeaterday cutting the front end off one of our vans with a plasma cutter yesterday and while he was here he very kindly cut the shape out ready to knock back and box in.

been a couple of weeks but ive finally done a bit more at the nova, i decided after plenty of umming and arrring to have a go at the paint myself as its only an engine bay and even if i do decide to show it its never going to be a concorse car so i thought what the hell if i get a run or 2 its not the end of the world and if it looks ****e ill just and it down and get it done properly and have only lost the cost of a tin of paint so i bought some paint today and heres how ive gone on, the primer seems to have gone on o.k so fingers crossed the paint and lacqure wont be too bad tomorrow.

Make sure you bend the bulkhead/fitting for the clutch cable, down towards the chassis leg the same way your heater matrix water pipe is, otherwise it will eat clutch cables like theyre going out of fashion!

Well, it will anyways, but it will be even worse if you dont :thumb:

Haha fair enough cheers for the advice. I wasn't sure about that, I did give it a go at the time when I did the matrix ones but it was fooking tight so give up and asked someone I know if they had to do it on there's and they said no lol.
Explains why he snapped the clutch cable at Pvs lol

not completely happy with it especially the blistering on the strut mount and a couple of places down the chassis legs but i suppose it will have to do. ill see what its like tomorrow then decided wether to leave it or get it done properly.

at flaming last the engine is fitted, been a farely busy end to the year with the nova, quite a few parts have started going back on, and with some help from my dad today the engine went in. bit of a tight squeeze arent they lol im glad i decided to take the cambelt cover off tho coz at one stage theres no doubt it would have had the paint off it. only problem now is getting the alterater belt back on, very tight i assume the alternator bracket will need loosening/taking off?

cheers, i managed to rub the bit on the strut back and re do it before a laqured it but theres a bit on the chassis leg still, but you cant see it with the engine in. yeah i know what youo mean about love/hate i really enjoyed doing it but was annoyed when it did that lol. id deffo do more tho, in fact im thinking of doing the sideskirts as the paints all chipped on them, ive been told it could have been the sealer on the welds, but i cant uderstand why the primer was fine, im thinking it was either a drop of diesel of the heater i used to warm the car up that ive missed or i put too much thinners in the paint,

Balley
30-12-12, 10:58 PM

30-12-12, 11:27 PM

the project is on a bit of a break at the min, the engine is running (in a fasion) and all the wings and bonnet are back on, ive also re-wired all the headlights to xenons properly and they switch off with the ignition too so no more flat batteries lol. the interior is still out of it which is my next job, as for the engine its still pver fueling a bit but not too the extent it was after playing with a few wires i have a lambda probe coming for it hopefully this will help on that front as at the min it is just looped out, (yeah i know its a 20xe and shouldnt have a lambda anyway but the lad who had it before had trouble with the ecu so he fitted the manifold loom and ecu off a c20xe im tempted to change it back to original but it will do for now untill i can find an ecu and loom.) then i need to get it registered and taxed as a 2l so i can go and give it a proper drive to see how it runs before finishing it off properly.

Balley
13-02-13, 05:47 PM
Remove the ecu plug and earth pin 20, that will put the car in none lambda mode! Check the Air flow meter wiring, if it runs better un plugged chance are it will need a new afm, my loom had loads of damaged wires including the cts and afm making her run rich.

clemo
15-02-13, 09:18 AM
oh sorry when i said the lambda is looped out thats what i meant ive put that wire to earth, the air flow i had on it was knackered, there was a wire inside it broken and when i pulled the plug off it made no differance so i got a second hand one which has made it run a lot better but still a bit too rich, altho the mixture screw on the air mass has had the blanking cover removed so it could need adjustment but our gas machine at work isnt working at the min so i need to get the car registered and take it to another garage that we use so i can set it up. im still going to fit the lambda tho because i think it will help with the fueling a bit because it will sense if it running too rich and adjust it a bit.

clemo
12-09-13, 07:47 PM
just a bit of an update a year on from taking the car off the road, its back on the road, i wont say its finished as a project is never really finished but its done for now. the last time i updated this i was having trouble with it massively over fueling i fitted a new air flow meter which made it better and fitted a lambda probe as i was running the lambda loom and ecu even tho it is a 20 xe non lambda, this made it driveable and i made a few short trips in it like this, before deciding to tidy up the wiring loom, oh and the pipe i was waiting for from demon tweeks for 3 months finally came!!!
https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/622796_10152231907893957_662471355_o.jpg

this pic was taken when i had it running well enough to drive it.

since then i took the wiring loom off completely and printed off a wiring diagram for a non lambda setup and found a non lambda ecu to run it on and set about cutting and soldering the loom removing wires not needed (from traction control etc) when doing so i checked the switches and sensors and found that the throttle switch had been adjusted wrong so it was reconising full throttle but not idle also i found another wire incorrectly wired, so now it is all back together and running loverly.

Hellooo :) yeah been a while. Your still on the look out for one then? Mines sorn at the minute and at work because the tax was due at the same time as the vxr so want to spread the 2 out a bit because its like £500 to tax them both, at least it will keep the salt off it though i suppose lol. It also deveoped an electrical fault a couple of days before the tax ran out so that helped make my mind up, i went to the petrol station and it wouldnt turn over so i lifted the bonnet to see if a wire had come off or if the starter was knackered, gave the wires to the starter a tug and thought ill give it another try and it went and was fine for a day or two then it was raining and was standing water at the side of the road which i ran through and it kept cutting out but managed to get it to work and its started and ran fine since, but i suspect that a relay or something is packing up.

hi again its been a while since ive posted anything but the car has been stored since november, i have done a couple of things to it over the winter, firstly i have have done away with the spax coilovers as they were leaking and knocking away like mad, (i did buy them second hand so to be expected really) and i have replaced them for the cheap and cheerful JOM blue line set ( im guessing that will stir up a debate) i have kept the spax rear shockers as i replaced them new last year so it has the JOM springs all round but spax rear shockers,
the other thing i haved done which will stir up a second debate is i have done away with the ecu and wiring loom as it was giving me loads of grief towards the end of last year and to be honest it was a bit of bodge job just to get me running so i was never happy with it and looked untidy, and as a result i am in the process of fitting 45 dcoe webers, and so far im pleased with how its coming on and starting to look tidier under the engine bay now i have a few pics below but they are early pics from when i was testing them for size so not the best pics, i will try and put a few more up in the coming months of how its looking now. and hoping to try and get it sorted and back on the road for the end of the month, i cant wait its taken a long time and cost a LOT of money but i feel im getting there now,

im not very good at the initial set up on carbs though so it runs a bit rough at the min so will probably take it to somewhere with a rolling road that knows about setting them up,
as for stereo its got a cheap jvc cd player and standard speakers which will do me fine as most of the time the soundtrack will be the engine like you say lol.

I adjusted the ignition timing to 10 degrees btdc yesterday ( please do correct me if it should be something differant, I just went by what I've been reading on various forums,) and today My boss spent 1/2 to 3/4 hour with me setting the carbs up getting them all drawing the same on tick over (cylinder 2 was a bit of a bitch actually and isn't spot on yet it slightly less on the synchro gauge than the rest) but it's running nice now and starts and idles first turn which is more than it would last week, but he says another half hour or so tomorrow playing with them and he thinks he will get them spot on, so I'm starting to feel happy that I'm seeing the end and getting it back on the road, it was getting me down a bit taking so long to get it right,

im starting to get a bit fed up with this sodding nova now Im starting to wish I had left it alone, i was driving it round last weekend and got a load of smoke from under the bonnet so popped the bonnet and couldnt see where it was coming from, so not knowing whether it was coolant or fuel dropping on the exhaust i parked it back in the garage and had a look at it in the week, fortunately it turns out it was the rubber hose off the back of the water pump so ordered a silcone one and fitted it yesterday and pressure tested it then started it up,
i thought brilliant then revved it up and the engine stopped,
tested for a spark and there was nothing, so took the distributor cap off and i could turn the rotor arm freely, so being a brand new dizzy im thinking oh **** please dont say the cam has snapped, so i took the rocker cover off as i wanted to do the breather plate mod anyway, and theres nothing wrong with the cam, which was a bit of a relief but meant that it could only be the dizzy so took it off and this is what i found ......

Yeah deffinately a relief to be honest and im not too worried about getting it fixed to be honest as i had it off h&h and they seem like good lads i and failing all else i still have the original dizzy with the same dowel on it. I was thinking of swapping them but a) dont want to void any warrenty on it and b) i dont know what snapped jt in the first place so needs checking in case it is something jamming inside dizzy.
Ill get there id have just liked to go pvs in it thats all so could do with it sorting sooner rather than later.

dgbnova#1
25-05-14, 10:03 AM
Put your old one back on and make sure it don't happen to that plus it's good to go then if hh cannot sort it quick

clemo
25-05-14, 10:25 AM
yeah could do but the old one is off the ecu set up so would have to use the module and coil off this setup but when I was looking in to what dizzy to use I was told that it's essential you match the modules and coil to them otherwise it burns the module out prematurely.....
if all else fails I've always got the Astra to go in its just the nova is more unique as the Astra is an Arden blue vxr and these shows are usually like a sea of Arden blue as it is lol.

I rang them yesterday and they are sending me a new dowel/disc so as they are roll pinned in place I swapped it off my old dizzy and it's all running again now, but they did say there is two things that are common for breaking them, one is if they aren't quite square when the dizzy Is fitted it can crack the dowel but I was carefull fitting it so I doubt that one and the second is if the cambelt isn't adjusted correctly it can cause the cam to snatch which jolts it which to be honest I'm still not sure about but I think just for peace of mind I will check the tension anyway.

I've not been on here for a while and was having a little look round my old posts and I can't believe it's been 3 years since starting the conversion project,
i finally got there (well apart from the occasional alternator rubbing the chassis leg which can be really annoying) but its driveable hense seems why there hasn't been any update recently, in the last 6 months it's become my daily work horse, doing 40miles a day so nicely run in now lol,
But is starting to show a few signs of age now though, don't get me wrong it's still tidy and regularly gets passing comments and the occasional offer of buying it which gets turned down every time, (I've become attached to it after 7-8 years of owning her) but when you look closely there are a few bubbles coming through the paint on near enough ever panel and I think it's getting time to decide what to do with it come the end of summer, the decision being do I have the small bits of body work painted to tidy it up and prolong it a little while longer maybe a couple of years or do I get myself a garage and another workhorse to replace it something cheaper to run (I've toyed with the idea of a cheap base model nova so I don't get nova withdrawal symptoms lol,)and sorn it so I can do a full restoration on it, I know this option would take a lot of time and effort not to mention money and would be a slow process doing jobs as and when I could afford. but I have always wanted the perfect nova as just a weekend/show car.
Hmm toughy
i will see this summer out though I think before making a final decision

The last month or so ive been giving the full resto idea some serious thought I've contacted a couple of chemical strippers and got prices on that and e-coat it ain't cheap but having weighed up other options and hearing horror stories about all methods of stripping from acid rotting the shell to sand blasting finding sand hear there and everywhere for years after and have decided that the chemical option is the one that I will go for when I do it as I have been win over now I've had the process explained and there is little to no chance of there being acid left in the chassis especially with the e-coat as it is also an Emersion process so the primer/coating gets back in where the acid has stripped.
So I'd best get saving,
i have however ordered a GM passenger door and wing from a well known Netherlands Opel specialist ;) so should be getting some shiney bits for photos soon, I've gone for Gm wing as I've heard the non Gm ones can be a bitch to fit sometimes,
im going to get the drivers side door and wings to when I've saved enough pennies.

what are people's thoughts on rear arches are the lower repair panels any good or would it be better with the full panel or they even do one up to the window frame, baring in mind I'm not brave enough to weld it myself so I'll have to pay someone to do it.

Good to see you're (or have) decided to keep it and restore. I've only read the last couple of posts and don't know much about the method of Emersion stripping that you seem sold on, but can recommend soda blasting. Basically, soda acts differently to sand, acid, and even Emersion. It is blasted as a medium, like sand, but doesn't come with the drawback of containing moisture. In fact despite going everywhere (and I do mean everywhere, as in making a total mess), as it is the exact opposite of sand and contains no moisture at all, it acts as a barrier in coating the bared metal once blasted in preventing it (given certain circumstances, such as being dry stored) from oxidising, which is a great advantage in affording you the opportunity of time whilst restoring each panel at a time without feeling as if you're fighting against the natural (and inevitable) process of rusting.

Furthermore (though don't quote me on this), I'm almost certain that soda blasting will come out at a fraction of the cost of other, more insidious, methods of stripping away paint and rust. Obviously I'm not saying it is the gospel of car paint removal, but I certainly found it effective and cost efficient. I also can't see it ever causing problems in years down the line.

Hi thanks for that bit of info I was having a quick look last night and there is a place in the Staffordshire (where I am) that does soda blasting and yes it is supposed to be less harmful than bead or sand as it doesn't need as much air pressure so deffinately will bear that in mind, even if I decide to stick with dipping for the shell there will be other panels and things I want cleaning so would save quite a bit I reckon as anything over a bare shell and bonnet is 80 -100 quid extra with dipping And the same again for the e-coat where on bolt on stuff and things easy to get at etch primer will probably be more than God enough to be honest.

You're welcome - just thought I would share my experience with it, which was a good one :thumb: Also sounds like you've got a good plan in terms of spending the money on emersion and e-coating on the big stuff, and using soda blasting for the smaller panels etc.

Will be interesting to follow your resto. All the best with it.

well hello again, its been a while since my last update, this is mainly as the car became less of a project and more of a daily, or more to the point a van, lugging a toolbox around for 12 months.
ive now bought a combo van and got myself a small garage to keep the nova in although i could still do with somewhere bigger to work on it but it can go back to getting some TLC.
while Ive been using it daily Ive had time to think about what i actually want it for in the future and with this in mind i have decided that the redtop is going, it was a good project at the time and i still love the way the 16v engine looks in a nova but for me personally its too uncomfortbale at low speeds round towns (accelerator and clutch to sharp so i find myself kangarooing a lot or purposely slipping the clutch to compensate) also it hunts a lot constant speeds (probably just down to the carbs needing setting up properly) the biggest annoyance though is when the alternator grinds on the chassis leg on hard left bends.
so with all that and the double fuel costs, double insurance and double tax, ive decided im going to be a boring old fart and put an c14se engine back in it, i used to love it when it had one before so hopefully i will again, also with sri's getting rarer it will as daft as it sounds be more unique than yet another redtop nova.
ive been looking for one for a while now but they are proving difficult to find without buying the 800 quid one off fleebay, which i wasnt desperate enough to change it at that price, but one came up out of an astra with gearbox for 200, its a bit rough but im going to strip it and start from scratch anyway and i still have the original gearbox and manifolds etc off mine to put back on, i will however be needing a distributor as its on coil and a v pully as its on multi rib but im in no hurry, and will buy anything i need as and when funds allow.

for the time being though i might as well make the most of the car as it is while the mot is still in force, so you may see me at a couple of shows through the summer.

Cant believe its been nearly two years since I last updated anything on here, although to be honest the car has been laid up in a lock up since the Mot ran out in 2016,
I am however starting a new business and so have a new unit with a ramp in it so I am planning to get back on doing something with the Nova in february, hopefully getting the engine in and running do a bit of welding in the rear wheel arches and generally tidy it up and then get it mot,d and back on the road for the summer then hopefully use it for a couple of years in ‘tidy but not immaculate’ form for a couple of years before then have a rethink about restoring it properly which was my original intention but situations change and all that.

With it being laid up for a couple of years ive not actually done anything to the car itself, I have however rebuilt the C14SE engine i bought it was a rusty heap when i bought it but had the block shot blasted and the head soda blasted, and so is looking a lot better now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180113/5396f4990b385997cf3bae6f0163e8e3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180113/c56136f17574461557626bc06e5384b8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180113/f8b095151bef576c709c4c9e008ae191.jpg

Well looks like the plan is going to be changing again, I got my nova up to my works unit, and got it on the lift to have a quick look what I was going to do, hoping that it would be a simple engine out, tank off weld up the rear inner arch which i knew was corroded from the last MOT, a couple of years ago, and then hopefully put the new engine in re-register it and then get it mot’d and drive it for a couple of years while i save up to do the job properly,

however it is pretty badly corroded and needs more than just the arch welding so i think Im going to have to strip the underneath completely and see what im dealing with as i suspect when i undersealed it in 2012 that I have sealed the rust in and its spead up the corrosion, so might have to look in to how much it will cost to soda blast the underside so I know how deep the corrosion has gone and repair what needs repairing. I suspect its not going to be cheap but i love the car too much to get rid.

just goes to show that you cant judge a book by its cover though because when i pulled on the estate with it the security gaurd said this looks tidy lol

Yeah Im a bit gutted at the min myself, from what i can see at the min its mainly the inner wheel arches at the rear the filler neck is right next to wear its gone so will have to take all the tank and everything off to do anything, also the front chassis leg where it meets the lower valance, ive had a good poke and knock with a screwdriver elsewhere but I havent started stripping the underseal off yet. Going to get on it in between jobs next week removing the bumpers and skirts etc to see what horrors are being hidden by all the plastic bits. Keeping my fingers crossed it doesnt end up being too much of a nightmare.

:( well ive got the skirts and wing off today to get a idea of how bad the rust actually is and my worst nightmare has come true.
Now i cant decide what to do, either cut my losses although I have the nova bug now and would really miss it, or get it patched up professionally and find myself chasing rust every year, or my final option is try and reshell it, im not too concerned about loosing the sri status as its a mix match of sri and gsi parts anyway as it is, but i would like to keep the number plate, and im not sure if its doable legally.
Food for thought but dissapointing news so felling a little down today.

The turret areas are commen to go there I would patch them up. The rest don't look too bad to sort out really. It's down to you how much you like the car I wanted to save my sr but it would of ended up with loads of plates which I didn't want. You could try and find a cleaner shell and 're shell it.

All I can say is buy a welder and start practising, start on the easy bits and work your way to the harder bits. It's all repairable, just have a look through loads of build threads and you'll see most of it being done before.
Oh and start looking for panels.

I would also say fix it, ive just repaired alot of the same areas on mine. Taken me a couple of months to do but worth doing yourself.
You just need to ut out enough to ensure your not leaving rot in to come back again.

Thanks for the input guys i was pondering the options a lot last night and ive decided to give it a go, Im just going to have to take my time and stop trying to rush getting it on the road (i wanted it on the road for summer). i already have a new welder ive only used a few times so might as well put it to some sort of use, ive got nothing to loose, at the end of the day i need to strip it whichever route I go down, so thats what im starting to do I got all the rear interior out today so got a better look at the rear inner arch and the inner skin doesnt look too bad, the wings and bumper are off and looking down the chassis rails from the towing eye and it looks like all the rot is down the side where its gone to a hole and the bottom, (the top and inner wall look sound) ive never thought to look down there before I can even see right down where it was cut and boxed in around the alternator for the redtop lol.
So yeah basically the plan is get the engine out as im changing it back to sri engine anyway, all the interior out and tank off so i dont set fire to anything and the dash will need to come out anyway as it has no engine loom at the moment as its on carbs and a standalone distributor setup.
Once everythings off I will attempt to tackle welding it, taking my time trying not to blow too many holes.
Im going to be needing rear arch repair panels are the non genuine ones any good fitment wise. Also same question about front panels?

I found the rear panels fit to be OK, but did require some work to sit nicely, the rear is the easy bit, you'll probably find getting panels for the front of the car harder to come by, the front panel is relatively easy to get hold of but the inner wings are rare and when they become available are very expensive as I believe there is only genuine ones.

If I was you I would completely strip the car and remove all the underseal, wire brush everything and see what your left with, then make the decision if your going to restore it.

Yeah thats what Im going to do (strip all underseal off and wire brush) as I suspect the reason its gone as quickly as it has is because of a mixture of the underseal
Trapping water and when Ive welded the strengthening plates in its burnt the factory protection from in the cavities and ive never reapplied any cavity wax or anything, if it doesnt look too bad after the wire brushing i might look in to soda blasting it in the prone areas.

The inner wings dont seem too bad touch wood, its the chassis rail thats concerning me, I did see one for sale a few months back, i did consider buying it as it was about £150 I wish i had now although i wouldnt know where to start fitting it myself but could have got someone to weld it in for me.

i have a couple of new Gm wings I managed to get a coulple of years ago before they all sold out and a new n/s door, could have done with the other one but was struggling to get one,

Ill deffinately need the front panel lower and headlight surrounds ( maybe full panel if i can find one not silly priced.
