As per title is the difference between 1.6 and 1.4 that noticeable when driving?

Not for normal stuff but caning it the GSi definately has the edge IME (especially when it starts to get outside national limit)

Its around 20bhp difference and similar torque - so yes, noticable throughout the range...

Without sounding like I'm an arsehole, but do you think they would bother to engineer two separate engines if they were not diffrent in power an perfomance?

Failed lol

20bhp should be fairly noticeable. If you can afford the extra tax and insurance its worthwhile IMO.

Just curious thinking of chopping in my Sri for a gsi I have found but can't make my mind up if it's worth it!

Thanks for the posts I'm sure with a straight through exhaust, manifold, etc it will open the gsi up a but more too widening the gap a bit more

Will a 4 branch Ashley exhaust bolt off the Sri straight onto the gsi?

Yes it will

Am I right in thinking that the 1.4 head still running the 1.6 cam work well as it increases compression? Could be an option if that's correct?

can you have another go at this?

do you want to fit a 1.4 head to a 1.6 or a 1.6 cam to a 1.4???

Didn't realise it was that badly worded. Was rushed at work lol

I read somewhere that if you run the 1.6 bottom end, 1.4 head with the 1.6 cam installed it gives good gains. I don't know if this is true or not? It's supposedly down to the 1.4 head being shallower, obviously increasing compression.

Was just suggesting it for the original poster as an option if what I've read is correct :)

My old Sri used to beat gsi's for fun lol

Chipped ecu and a decent hand made exhaust. Iirc 124hp on well lane turbo rollers many moons ago.

Don't forget the SRi is group 7 insurance and the GSi group 11, that can make quite a difference if your still young.

42bhp from a chip and exhaust!

Remap able chip and it was a hand made exhaust, I think the head had been skimed to its maximum as well to raise the cr.
