If you put a pre 72 plate on a post 72 vehicle can you legally run black and silver plates?

No, iirc it goes on the age of the vehicle I think. (father-in-law got asked to fit correct ones on his series land rover)

it doesn't seem to stop those mini cooper owners from getting them, but mot stations should fail them for wrong plates.
