Hi all, everybodys allowed one stupid question per day, so heres mine. Is it possible to change the mains bearing shells on a xe without dropping the crank/box right out?

Looking for a less time consuming way.

Thanks for any replies.

Bruce.

answered my own question today, yes you can do it.

that must have been fun.. how did you get on with the one near the oil pump??

back in the old days, when mass produced engines were fairly crap, the thrust mains used to knacker up a lot, and the common bodge was to drop the sump & just change the bottom ones...

screw driver to poke the old/new one out then the new one back in. well lubed up they slide around rather easy tbf

a friend rebuilt and xe using the standard sized mains bearings not realising they were .25 ones needed for the crank

i bet that ran well lol lol....

when i worked at a tractor dealership, i saw some amazing bodgery.. engines running with a piston & rod removed & a jubilee clip over the journal oil hole to keep the oil running round the engine was possibly the best.

it wasnt run, wasnt until i asked him what shells he had fitted it came apparent. i sold him the crank you see.

sounds like genius at work. lol

what beats me is that these skills seem to have died out...

you see people going on the interweb asking for good secondhand pistons!!!!! when its obvious that the engine needs a rebore & oversize pistons.

they don't know what the numbers on the back of shells mean

they have no idea how to file a ring gap down

gapping & measuring seems to have disappeared from peoples thought process
