View Full Version : knackerd gearbox:(
right last night thought id take the nova out for a drive night was going pretty well then on way home me and my bro decided to have a little race (on a private road) my nova saloon against his 450bhp corsa b race was going pretty well until i hit 3rd gear and then the box gave up on me lost 3rd and 5th gear and and a proper loud noise from the box so now the saloon is defeantly coming of the road for a while gunna order my rods and bearing tubular manifold and gt28rs turbo and maybe aftermarket managment then bring it back out
an f20 on a LET is always marginal, and they are getting old now.
well my next question is what other gearboxes are available that are stronger than the f20 but i dont have to have the mount moved and will still use my quaiff lsd and 6 paddle clutch

just bung another rebuilt f20 in there, job jobbed
strongest box is f28. the f20 clutch disc wont fit the f28 not sure about the diff
dont really wanna have to keep changing gearboxes every couple of months if i caint get another type of box does anybody re build boxes on here with upgraded parts to take the extra power as when it comes out im hoping for 400bhp or there abouts

might be worth talking to dave dixon he done some trick work to the box in his drag car apparently,
cheers will drop him a message
F28. It's only a couple of hours at most to weld the mount on.
caint use a welder lol and havent got the knowledege to move the mount i wanted internal gear shifter but same problem i dont know how and i dont wanna ruin my saloon
F20 LSD will fit in F28, the clutch won't though.
No matter if the F20 is rebuilt or not it won't take major abuse for long, they are crap. I managed to smash one on a standard XE.
Get an f28 on it mate, the mount isnt hard at all,
I managed it on my own
i would like to fit the f28 but id never be able to convert the mount if anybody knows anyone near the birmigham area that wouldnt mind doing it for me then id be more than happy to pay some one else to do it so i know its done right at the same time they could convert it to internal gear shifter lol

if its welded in the wrong place make them take it off and do it again, your over thinking it.
or drill a new hole in the mount bracket where you need it lol if its in the wrong place

If someone's doing the welding for you then you still need to get all the preparation work done for them, like the mount in bare metal, along with the chassis leg, all offered up perfectly in place.
Dunno how many times I have to repeat the same thing about LETs; the last thing you want all that torque. It kills mounts, CVs, driveshafts, gearboxes and as most recently demonstrated, clutch plates / bolts.
All you have to do is look at a dyno graph to see where all the torque comes in like a comedy anvil and think about it as a huge, instant twisting force. If people drove them part throttle to get the turbo spinning & let the revs climb before fully gassing it that would massively reduce the strain. All the power that comes with the excessive torque means nothing in my book if it breaks anyone of the afore mentioned on a regular basis.
