View Full Version : My Spider project
Hi All!
I find a Corsa Spider in my country (Hungary) and suprise myself when I quit to my Vectra (Cavalier) project :)
It was 7 years in a small shed-garage. It's not a bad condition but a lot of work needed.
Hopefully I report a frequently progress, but probably I will be slow a little.
Firstly a few mobile pictures (sorry about the bad quality, will be making normal photos):

My plan: restoring it as original as possible, but maybe get carbs and a set of H&R :)
i like that, plans sound good also

very nice looks like you got the weather for it :)
Thanks pals!
Yes, I want to keep the original engine (maybe fit bike carbs later).
The weather is really good here, but no MOT yet and it need a deeper workaround.
Firstly changing oil, timing belt, etc. to starting the engine, then running gear, bearings...
In winter time I take up the bodywork, but I want to enjoy it in this year :) Hopefully it will be working fine in the next month.

That's some pretty hardcore reinforcement of the floor!
Nice project.
Yes, it need and applied by the irmscer factory (http://opel-corsa-a.com/index.php?seite=Modelle/Irmscher/Spider.htm) because no B and C pillar :)
In the weekend I finished the timing belt and water pump change and my friend helps me to set the carburetor :)
The first try to start:

I forgot the first successfully start but I took a video about the first running :)

My friend set the idle and CO and we start again:

The engine sound and running is much healthy now :)
I took a few photos about the old water pump and etc. I will upload these soon.

Good times mate
Iain
I have 2 set of GSi Recaro seat. The first set has disassembled, but the bottom part is good for the try fitting :)
Unfortunatelly, because of the sill reinforcement, the seat space is strait if I want to sliding the seat backward, but it looks can get it if I re-bending the seatbelt holder.
http://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/s720x720/536640_414478751923289_648921565_n.jpg

converted vs. original:
http://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/526396_414478868589944_641096871_n.jpg
It will be fit:
http://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/481046_414477945256703_1198123733_n.jpg
The holder from the right side is worst condition (and maybe I was too strong :D) and I broke it.
My friend will bring me a few in the weekend :)
We have a sunny times these days and the temperature was a little high in my garage and my brain also :D
I find an old controller to my toy-car...
http://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/418838_414478705256627_835166668_n.jpg
Don't have too much time for the Spider now, just a little update: the rear license plate light painted (don't look at the skew bumper!):

Nice spider mate, I really love the front bumpers on these, they just look so cool.
Thanks Guys!
I gathering the stuffs for the big winter renovation :)
I got Konis with -60mm coils and a set polyurethane silent.
http://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/s720x720/564301_421652791205885_1451007784_n.jpg
http://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/578650_419469974757500_213523441_n.jpg
I broke the right side of seat belt slide while bending. My friend bring me a few, but these are also fit to left side :D
Temporarily I try to bend one for the other side and it looks fine. I have enough space for the seat :)
http://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/426673_422397044464793_2111044128_n.jpg
I put the grey seats (so easy without roof! :D). These are also "temporarily", because I have a set of the yellow-brown (like the SR version), but the rear seat is unique in the Spiders and the front seats are not too good conditions. These are need a little upholstery in the future.
http://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/207162_422397174464780_1483461130_n.jpg
My girlfriend not really love the cubic-shape and little cars, but I think she begins to like it! :)
http://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/417423_422397241131440_1989206741_n.jpg
I didn't post any update for a while, now I trying to make up! :)
I rented a trial license plate for 1 day to "test" (enjoy) the Spider. I had lucky because the weather was fine, so we made a little trip.

It was working fine, but I had to change a fuel pipe, because it begins to lake, but no any problems :)
Wheels tryout with a few dilemma:
7x14 ET20 Schmidt Retro, they looks cool, but it need a little wide arch at rear to fit when the lower suspensions will be under the car:
http://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/377188_426505900720574_2059763780_n.jpg
6.5x14 ET35 BMW BBS, I think they are nice if I polish them and buy shorter tyres (eg: .../45 or something like this)
http://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/303580_426506017387229_497858462_n.jpg
6x14 ET38 ATS, need rear spacers to looks better and don't have caps :(
http://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/399049_426505857387245_1136574048_n.jpg
Finally I got back my previous wheels (were in my ex-XE Corsa (http://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418298_336078256430006_723092485_n.jpg)) in the last week from my friend, they are
6.5x15 ET33 Speedline SL 474, I love them and wouldn't be problem with bigger brakes, but maybe looks better if I also respray the car to white when the bodywork finished.

Yeah I love the look of the speedline SL 474's but need a colour change. I also love the Shmidt Retro's too but the offset is too much :(
Very nice car you have there, I would love one myself too
This! Repaint them so they look all new and nice.

Schmidt Revo's all the way :thumb:
Keep up the work, you will have a nice winter to give it a good finish ;)
I have time to thinking about the wheels, but I need to find out soon the body color.
After all, probably I keep the yellow color because I really love the GT-s with these interior:
http://opel-corsa-a.com/Modelle/Vorfacelift/GT_Stoff.jpg
I already have this seats and the instrument panel is brown and the color also doesn`t need a big repaint, so maybe it also cheaper too a little bit. I think a black painted rims will be looking cool under a Jamaican yellow :)
Another story: it looks I will get Dellorto-s and a camshaft (300°), so I have a lot of idea...
you know:
http://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/409596_447626818594627_118632965_n.jpg
:D
Hopefully it will be a successfully winter!
Thanks for the encouragement again guys! :)
I got a few interesting things yesterday :)
40's Dellortos with trumps and inlet

Oil temperature, oil pressure, voltage instruments (maybe from Kadett C?). I tried and these almost 1din size, so it will be fit to the radio place :)
http://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/28769_461839097187254_619179138_n.jpg
Very nice I'd do the Schmidt centres body colour with a polished lip would look excellent
I thinking it will be shiny black center and polished lip

Put the center in the body colour and plasti dip it. Then you still have a choice :thumb:
I love the twins ;)
I don't have too much update now. My friend helps me to put off the exhaust. Unfortunatelly the back silencer is rotten and I cannot detach it from exhaust system under the car, but finally it's done! After we also put off the fuel tank.

The cassy still doesn't looks too bad :)
http://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/r180/408424_484180934953070_1143904008_n.jpg

This is the actual status now. Hopefully we can start the bodywork in this month. So, it's a little bit in a wait state.
I'm not sure it's a slow process or I can't wait (probably both) :)
In my spare time I try a -60 Koni with Speedlines and it looks cool, but maybe it could be lower :D
http://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/r90/250741_484180734953090_527782104_n.jpg
I also worried about the 256 brake will not enough space under the 7x14 Schmidts, but I try it and it look ok :)
http://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/539807_484180731619757_1533855293_n.jpg
Finally in the next week we can start the bodywork. It was a slow and frustrated time, while the unassambled Spider waiting in the garge.
I did more stripdown for helping my welding-man, but the irmshcer solutions looks terrible and home-made style sometimes. The added struts joint looks weak (fixed in few points sometimes) and the cutted roof also looks strange for me. The putty between the alu canopy-holder and the windscreen frame is peeling.
Good things the chassis still look in good condition and we find the weak points. I plan to making a rollbar-kind pipes into the A column, because it also weak as the original (I have bad memories about a crashed redtop (http://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/269337_478903832147447_592252199_n.jpg) :D ), so I don't want to trusting only the lucky.

I reporting here for a long time. The Spider is in the paintshop at the moment.

Probably the previous owner. I seen a lot of "interesting" solution :/
Better if I know it and I have to chance to make it better.
Now I have a little free time and a bigger place in the garage without the car for my own paint job, change the bearings, renewing the brakes... :)

Nice work mate, next summer will be sweet for you! ;)
And I had more or less the same amount of Filler AND LEAD-works on my Michalak, better that then throwing them away :d
Thank you Mates!
I hope (and it looks I have chance) she will be on the road in the next spring! I trying to do everything as better as possible. I learn from you guys a lot! :)
The rear brake cylinders are a little bit sick maybe. I had a little spare time (I know I can spend it for other things, but you know... ). My friends also joking me "where can I got Koni cylinders?" :D
I have 2 spare transmissions. An F13 with C374 end ratio and an F10 with W418.
We were re-assembled these with my friend who helps me to build a shorter one.
We use the F10 transmission house (it's lighter than the F13) with the W418 differential, but the F13 gears.

I drove this configuration in a B Corsa (with C14SE) and I really like that. The max speed will be around 180-190 at 6000 rpm, but it's enough in a cabrio :) I will fit this to the 13S engine with the Dellortos and the tuning camshaft (around 276 if I remember well), etc. I think it will be suprise a few C20NE Corsa :)
The Spider's original engine (13NB with F10-W394) will be stored. I don't want to braking it up, because it have around 30k miles. I trying to keep every original parts.

Trust me, the max speed will be more than enough :d
Treat yourself with a holiday to Billing next year ;)
Something starting... We brought home the Spider today :)
I have more space in the paint shop to shooting a few pictures.
In the background my black C12NZ daily Corsa is watching us :)

A few months ago I bought GSi (SR) bumpers from my friend, because the fiberglass Irmscher set is in bad condition and the GM bumpers are also lighter and better condition. So the Spider will be GSi (SR) optic:

Looking good mate :thumb:
I find it this week in a rusty Corsa from a gipsy owner (I hope it's politically correct :D ).
I have lucky he doesn't know what really is it and I save it from the bin.
In these situation I always thinking about how many rare and value parts are finished in trash by this way :(
It need a little leather work, but I think the black leather will be cool with yellow thread :)

Bumpers and front end look great, wheel is cool.
I'm slower than I thought, maybe because of the cold weather.
Finally I got my suspension set. My friend working in Germany and he bought the C20XE and a few other parts from my ex-Vectra A (Cavalier Mk3) and he bring me a H&R 35841-1 in the last evening

I found GM number on the cleaned roof locker and it looks a Monza part (http://www.opel-classicparts.de/schloss-32152.html) :)

This is an Epic project. Love the colour scheme.
Unfortunatelly I still don't have too much update, because I don't have too much time (but the spring is sooooo close...).
I have bandaged the exhaust downpipe and put the original engine.
http://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1/1622711_620094238028405_753638336_n.jpg
Probably I can start the building of the interior soon and I will be almost finish. Can't wait for the first start!
Meanwhile my friend help me to rebuild my another 1.3 engine and when it's finished I can install the Dellorto pack lol
The front suspension has applied and I put my friend's wheels for temporary lol

Meanwhile I got a set of Twingo Intra 7x13 wheels. I love these for a while. I seen this "kart" style on Minis and a few projects here in PNG.
I have to try it of course:

I had the real fake Smoor's on my white... But they were also a bit too wide (7x13 front and 8x13 back) lol
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q300/CorsaAAngel/CorsaAAngel/CorsaAAngel159.jpg
I see the rear fender need to rebuild, so the 8x13 could be fit :)

No mate, that was before the last rebuild of the white one.
The arch was done and looked like this fitted with the 7x13 ET0:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1/17828_10200132625257227_2115348445_n.jpg
It's soothing, I don't want to rebuild the arches (and I've just kidding about your rebuild need, It's still cool original looks and I like it!). If I remember well (I will check it on the weekend), my Intras have more ET (probably ET20 or something), so probably I don't will be any problem with them :)
Unfortunatelly I don't have too much time for garaging (is this word exist? :D ), but my turtle-speed project is continue :)
I finished the heather-casing renew. I have to anti-rusting and respraying the rusty air distribution flaps and also change the linting sponge insulation. As you can see, I using cutted polyfoam for this :) Not the best picture (and quality), but maybe not a major progress:

The biggest thing is my friend helps to me to the new leatherette and the windscreen which is also fit. I hope I will have a free weekend now and I can continue this! A few picture about the indoor works:

Clothes pegs FTW good progress
I have only a little update with picture. I put the front:

It will be cool with the black rear spoilers:

Still don't have too much time but I did a few little things (eg. select/variable the lock set for minimize the numbers of the keys :D ) and I have issues with the modified mirrors (I cannot put the cutted mirror glass to it and I broke one), and the rear bumper is not fit somehow, but I'm on it.
I plan to do a little bit more progress with the door locking mechanism and putting back the side windows and want to build up the interior when the wiring is finished.
I have a small update about my very slow project.
We will moving to a bigger house soon (with bigger garage of course :D ), so this is an another, but good reason for the slow progress, but therefore I have to finish the renewing and installing brakes for the easier rolling between the garages.

Very good new home for you and the car

The car is an Opel/Vauxhall color from 1969 (but probably the same like today's GM colors): L407 chromgelb

I thinking about the power steering before, but I want to keep the engine bay original as possible, but I got a Corsa B EPAS and I decide to install it. It's just a trial yet, because looks like the column holder is need a little modifying (and probably the EPAS axle house also) to fit into the Spider's steering column holder correctly.
The long and the cardan connection size is looks OK compared with the A column:
https://scontent-b-vie.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10430858_750221865015641_3047121996046993771_n.jpg ?oh=b39e7d22b8cd08325a80bb578527b817&oe=5502E210
The front is not fitted correctly yet, because not enough space at back.
Sorry about the bad quality, but it was dark and my hand shaking a little bit because I hold that heavy electric motored EPAS before :D
