The gearbox on my 1.0 nova was an f10 I noticed when moving the engine today it says 5 speed on the gearbox housing but only had 4 speed gears in the car , is it a 5 speed box ? Or do they all state 5 speed on the actual housing

Does it have an internal allen key type plug on the end casing or a large nut style one?
Large nut = 4spd
the early 4speed ones have the 5 speed sign on them, but if you upgrade to a 5 speed, make sure you get the top shifter box off the 5 speed box too, as there is an extra bit inside to work the 5th selector

Basically my current gearbox ( F13 ) is whining its nuts off so i was thinking of using the f10, but with it been 4 speed i dont think i will, unless the gears can be changed over easily ?
Or would it be easier to just buy another f13 / f15 gear box

large nut, although my current f13 has a large nut aswell and thats 5 speed ?
large nut is 36mm on a 4 speed....
you can fit a cluster from an f10/f13/f15 easily enough without removing the box, as long as you change the output gear over to the original one.. (puller & circlip plier, gaskets off the bay)
if its whining, its usually either low oil or a wheel bearing on the way out...

The release bearing is noisey so the box is coming off anyway, I think its been run on low oil previously as I've filled it to the top and ran it for 200 mile and it still whines
