can i be sacked before my notice??

hi all,
ive recently been offered a new job which i start at the begining of september but i am still working. if i told my boss i was leaving at the end of august so that he can get a replacement and because im nice could he sack me there and then, like tomorrow for example?

I'm sure that with agreement, you could be released early from your contract. Either that, or sacked for gross misconduct, but that doesnt look good on a CV

Well if you can't trust your current boss, just give them as much notice as your supposed to, it might just be a week, depending on your contract. Theres no point in giving them two months notice unless you know for sure they will keep you employed in that time.

If not don't do anything......

Letting your boss know depends largely on your notice period in your existing contract with your current employer, and if you can survive until your new job starts if they terminated your contract (not going to a rival company are you?? could be marched off the premises on "gardening leave" paid or worst case dismissed (which may not be ethical), not knowing your situation, I would give the minimum notice whether that's a week or month.

the best way to get paid gardening leave is to not tell them where you are going...

if you are going to a rival.... making sure you have a full contacts list & technical library before handing in your notice (or getting caught making copies) is imperative.

Unless you and your boss are good mates (never a good thing!) I would advise to check your contract for how much notice you need to give, and give that amount of notice, remember there is always the slim chance the new job may go belly up or you ay change your mind.

I know it's a selfish attitude but from experience....keep yourself covered.

Without a contract if you're an official employee (paid through PAYE etc?) 1 week notice up to 2 years service is compulsory, then it's a week per year with the company. If it's cash in hand do whatever seems polite, or not, or fall off the face off the earth and never see them again lol

I've allways worked it on the basis if you get paid weekly then you give a weeks notice if paid monthly then one months notice. what line of work are you in as it make a difference.
I work in construction and have only ever known it to be a week.
