compress coil spring (you will need a coil spring compressor) until the tension is off the top mount, counter hold top and use 19mm neck ring spanner to undo nut. or an airgun.

Edit, if you've never removed or compressed a coil spring before please be careful! Perhaps get a garage to do it if you're unsure :)

I always start to slacken the top nut while it's still on the car just so I know it loosening and that way you don't need 3 hands

Air gun it off with spring clamps on, easiest way!

I've never had any problems loosening them on every car and van I've tried it on using hand tools

you need to soak the top in wd40 or similar for a day or 2 first.

then you need a 19mm stepped ring spanner & a 9mm (i think) stepped ring or 1/2" dr socket, to lock the top of the thread...

now, if it is seized, which it might be, & the strut is being scrapped, you could try mole gripping the inner shaft to get it undone if you can't get hold of a decent 9mm

if its being scrapped, you could also cut thru the shaft & the get it in a vice, but i've never had to do this on a nova.

Usually use mole grips on the damper rod (with a cloth or something so it doesn't get damaged) then loosen the top nut
