I don't think there is one..... Haynes went down the pan just before/after the 20XE arrived so I don't think there are any proper manuals for it.

My blue Astra mk2 book has a large section on DOHC engines which I used to rebuild mine.

You only need the torque settings, everything else can pretty much be done from any twin cam engine build manual.

Haynes calibra book is what I use but Autodata is better for torque settings etc

might sound stupid but think i need to study what is involved in the rebuild more then the torque settings right now.

i dont see it being stupidly complcated tbh mate ive got all the time in the world to do it so wouldnt have to rush it, but its more about what, how, where and when to check for wear and other stress factors that i want to learn

The Haynes is good for strip rebuild but does not give full detailed info, for example it does not give instruction on valve guide replacement or valve guide fitting depth on the XE head.

would it be worth getting a diffrent book as well then, one that goes a bit more in depth to rebuilds?

tbh testing for wear etc, you are genuinely better off sending it to an engine builders.... you won't have the right tools for measuring stuff accurately/properly, and I doubt you will want to spend half a grand on tools to just measure up.

what about the stuff i can measure with feeler gages and them digital reading measuring do'dars

It's good for checking oil pump wear and crap like that but as Stuart says, something are best left to those who know best.

I'm just doing a strip down and general check over and found 6 fooked exhaust valves, the head will be going to an engine shop for new guides and rebuild with new valves, it's not entirely out of my depth but they will do a better job and much quicker than me lol
