I recently picked up a mint pair of astra 16v brakes (calipers, discs and pads) but I think there are one or two bits missing - thias isnt a realy problem coz I got them for a v good price - however before I remove my existing brakes, I need to know what bits I need

(I'll post pics in a bit) - heres what came with the pack -

2 caliper main sections (the big bit that holds the piston)

4 pads - 2 with a circular spring clip built into one - which cl;ips into the piston

2 discs - big, vented and chunky

2 mounting screws (allen head type) with plastic protector tops

I'm sure there should be a top bracket and some spring wires but I've not seen a set up close.

Anyone got any pics they can post - also how do you fit them? Any fitting instructions from a kit would be great

Theyre not GM parts - motor factors I think - but theyre spotless - just short a bit or two

It doesn't sound like theres anything missing to me...

Before you start check ur brake fluid is resovoir is full.
To fit them its well easy - jack it up - take wheel off unbolt caliper using allen key - theres 2 bolts at the back of the caliper. Take caliper off and suspend out of the way - put the 2 bolts to one side for now.

Then - take off the disc (whack it with a hammer from behind) until it comes off the hub. If there's a star philips shaped screw in the disc just take it out and chuck it away - u dont need it - trust me.

With disc removed - clean hub face and apply copper grease. Put on the new bigger disc and align with holes on hub. Now put the new pads in the new caliper - put some copper grease - behind the pads - not on the braking surface!

Now slide the new caliper on and bolt it using the allen bolts u removed earlier. Now from the old caliper remove the brake hose from the caliper end using spanner. Transfer this to the new caliper (use gloves - brake fluids horrid) use the old copper washers - or buy new if your really can be assed. Don't worry about lost brake fluid. Right now fill your fluid up again u will have lost a bit of fluid doing this.

Now repeat on other side of car. Now you will need to bleed the brakes - its easy as f**k - buy a "one man brake bleeding kit" theyre only bout a fiver and follow the instructions - u cant go wrong.

Hope this helps dude.

sounds like everything

or does it...

the "caliper main section" is actaully 2 parts right?

u have the carrier that goes round the disk and the actual caliper body that the pads sit in?

u should have 2 10mm allen bolts for each carrier (for the carrier to steering knuckle mount) and 2 7mm ones for the caliper to carrier mounting points - if the carriers are still attached it makes it all a lot easier

if u dont have the carriers at all you could be in for some problems :/

the spring wires are part of the "fitting kit" u can buy from motorfactors for like ?5 so they aint an issue

they stamped ATE??

:?

Theres the main bit - one section (that carries the pads and houses the piston) but nothing else attached to the caliper - dont think I've got the carriers (the bits held in place by springs).

I'll take pics tonight and post up. Theyre really nice looking - big and chunky - just need to make sure theyre all there...

Can you get carriers? Or doesn anyone know of any decent scrappy's?

dont forget to bend back your disc guard or get some bigger 1s or they will rub on the disc and sound awful

sounds like you dont have the piece which bolts to the hub. the rest is pretty much useless without it

when you do fit it then just take off the disc cover, it aint needed

Heres the pic of one of the calipers - the other ones missing the 2 bolts

http://www.novaload.net/forums/album_see.php?id=1480

http://www.novaload.net/forums/album_see.php?id=1482

Theyre ATE ones - have the following codes stamped on them -

FN 52/24L
5
2027
KBA 60298
CN 977

The 2 allen key bolts slide so I'm guessing these are the sliders so the calipers can move back and forth.

However sure theres a top bit missing...

Theres 2 holes facing the piston (as you look down into it) on the outer casing - sure the spring clips go in there.

Can anyone advise me where I can get the extra bits - anyone know of any good scrappy's that just sell the bits I need?

Desperate for help!

unfortunately the guy I got them from (selling for a m8) doesnt have the other bits

u could try SCB round be me but they are expensive and depending on how stupid they are u may or may not get away with paying the full price for a caliper

ok - been searching the net and found that the only bits I need are as follows -

Caliper slider bracket x 2
Slider bolts and dust covers x 2
Spring retaining clips x 4

Pics as follows -

The site I got it from was this -

A guy thats just fitted astra 16v brakes to his astra.

What I want to know is I need astra sliders - can I just get these from Vauxhall or is there a special kind of slider I need for the nova (or can I use the astra one of the nova?)

My brakes are currently 1.2 ones - non ATE - standard factory fit pish

think you will find that you cant buy them from vauxhall as its part of the main caliper assembly

best to go to a scrappy and get them or see if the seller still has them lying around
