damn:mad:
had hoped the new loon we bought was overheating due to stat being stuck but after it being changed (plus cam belt) - still no difference:eek:
then had temp sendor changed - but still no difference:eek:
flushed rad etc and refilled - still no difference:eek:
so take it it's the head gasket:cry::cry:
this things costing me a packet:roll:

stat, sender & a rad flush...you should have change for £20..

what is it doing? the rad caps can fail, causing boiling up. a head gasket won't cause overheating, but overheating will cause gasket failure

a head gasket is about another £20, just don't get it mail order, just get it locally.

dose the fan work?
are the blowers blowing hot air?
is the water creamy/ mayonaise?
did you change the water pump with the belt?
dose it run ok when you have it running?

had head gasket changed for good measure the other day (my mechanic is loving how much i am spending) which was also done to stop an annoying oil leak at the same time BUT temp still reading really high on the dash board and system still not creating pressure as you can take off cap when its hot without the usual burst of hot water everywhere!
water pump works fine so didn't have it changed!
fan works
blowers really kick out heat (no chilly winters them)
no mayo in oil cap
runs ok but hunts on idle noticed breather pipe missing from air filter so replaced it now we need the other breather block near starter as that's cracked.
and power down a bit on hills but that could be the carb and fuel delivery?

Does your fan work? has the fan fuse blown? and are all the pipes tightened properly? Have you checked the other hoses to see if you have pressure in them? the only time you won't have pressure is usually if a pipes loose and its leaking air/water

having checked everything we now think that it is running at "high" all the time on the dashboard read out because probably it is the dash bit that's probably wrong?
as fan works fine and hoses still a bit limp but no water loss so reading on dash must be false?
so waiting to see if we can get a dials for the dash from another car to eliminate that next.
thanks for all the replies!

The fan will come on at 106 degrees? which would be normal, so when the fan comes on check the temp guage, if it reads high its the read out thats wrong

this may sound silly but, have you checked the ignition timing, if it is retarded a car can overheat when be pushed on a long run.

jon_nova1 - yep reading is high all the time and then into the red before fan kicks in even though pipe work not too hot to touch and you can still loosen header tank cap so sounds like readout on dash!
so what's next - new dash dials as stat and sender have been replaced?
the dials go from cold to high within a mile or so which sounds too quick by any means

marc69 - will try to find someone with a timing gun to make sure its set up correctly at weekend

thanks everyone for advice so far!
