View Full Version : head advice
i was just reading bout the modifying a 1.4 head and where it ses to use a 1.3-1.2 head for better flow but i was woundering if u are gonna send the head off to have aload of work done as in bigger valves porting and so on are u still better sending the 1.3 head off to b done or the 1.4 just woundering as i kno the 1.3 is better in standard form but wot bout once they are both modified which is the best ???
The 1.4 is a really poor head, not only is it restrictive, but you can't port it enough to bring it up to the 1.2 standard as the water jackets are too close.
The 1.2/1.3 will be better whatever stage of tune they are in.

you increase your compression slightly, and it also will find you a few bhp. especially if its the naff 1.4 head youre ditching

the 1400 head is designed for emissions/economy as a lean burn head.
its ports go into the head and sort of corkscrew around the valve. this gives good turbulance and mixing which helps with torque but its design hampers top end a bit.
the 1200/1300 heads were made ages ago and are far better shaped for topend giving a nice smooth flow onto the back of the valve.
the 1200/1300 heads (almost identicle, appart from comp ratio) were designed and made in the same factory as the ford 8V SOHC head.
hence why the two companies heads are almost identicle (port size/shape wise) its jsut the valves on the ford are angled a bit.
i belive they were made in spain (not that, that makes any difference)
ive done/will do more research with the flow of the 1200 head, ive already made some small progress, which is slightly odd but hey lol
am i rite in think i want the 2e3 carb as well as ive found one down the scrappy
