Just got home to find a lovely surprise waiting on the doormat. Car has been caught at 39mph in a 30mph zone.

Caught by Greater Manchester Police. Does anyone know the speed awareness threshold for this area and if i'm likely to get that option?

I done a speed awareness last Friday.... had a choice of either £60 fine & 3 points OR £80 course fee and no points...

The guys running the course told me that here in the midlands (dont know what its like where you are?) there very lenant going on a basis of 10% +9mph. Obviously gonna be different for every county.

Chance of a course are medium going on what they told me... as in courses are handed out when your doing just that little bit to much speed, as oppose to properly hauling ass.

I thought it was a bit dodgy with the bike as if that was a car begin me you wouldn't even be able to see my number plate surely?

I remember it well, he was trying to catch his mate who had just tore past me and was literally in my boot! Hopefully he will have got ****ed for it too!

I was nobbled at 42 in a 30 (wasn't paying attention and didn't realise it was a 30 lol) here and had the course. That was in Dorset though which is the most expensive county for it - £105!

FOI request in 2009 says Greater Manchester do 10% + 6mph so you should be ok at 39.

hope you can do it mate

when i did my course there was a bloke who could barely speak english, i mean hello, yes, goodbye was your lot. and he got through

Story on this particular speed trap.

http://www.saddleworthnews.com/?p=12132

Why has the van got an orange light on top, what a joke. Where its located is a quarry entrance as well, pretty sneaky really!

Andy

that is entrapment

Bum luck dude, bike probably got off as the crosshairs were on your motor,

Edit, a guy at work got done, the course cost him £130

Grey area.... there is a speed limit, you shouldn't break it, therefore if you then its your own lookout on that front.
Not trying to be holier than thou but the rules is the rules. Entrapment would be simply doing you for less than the limit lol

Andy

There should be clear signs warning of cameras, thats all they need to cover their backs on.
If there isnt, then the ticket can be deemed as entrapment.
The only areas i agree with the "safety" cameras is in built up areas,ie around schools etc,if you speed around those areas then you deserve all you get imo.
But on country roads, with no houses/people about, come on,is it really necessary??
Common sense is needed sometimes.
Doing you for less than the limit would be a plain cun7s trick-nothing else lol

The only place I really 'speed'* is here in Italy where doing 20kmh over the limit is still too slow for about 60% of the people and you get passed with hand gestures being dealt out lol

* as in drive consistently over the limit rather than the odd spurt of spirited driving

Andy

like this?? lol

lmfao, thats not entrapment. If they were driving behind you and pushing you (literally) over the limit, or trying to race you then yes, entrapment. But simply observing and recording isn't - speed limits apply even when the police aren't about lol

Country roads with no houses and people though should be NSL, when they stick fecking 40 or 30 limits on them for no apparent reason makes me irate

I got my picture taken last year at 39 in a 30 in the GMP area. 3 points and £60, no option of the awareness course unfortunately.

I thought the general rule of thumb was 10% +1 or 2??

Not good. Have you ever had points before?

Surely one sp30 isn't going to affect your premiums Lee?

It varies between each police force service

Never heard anyone round here being offered the course instead of points

I don't think one sp30 puts your premium up that much

I have one any my premiums are cheap imo

Course cost me £140 but was still the best option

This.
But more towards differs in every county. Wales being he outright worst.

TBH I would have been finicially better off taking the points as my insurance wouldve only gone up £23.78 lol lol much cheaper then an £80 fee (£60 fine & £20 course fee).

Iain

Er you still pay the fine even if you get points?

Mike

Er you still pay the fine even if you get points?

No but yes...

Im my case it wa £80. £60 of that goes to the constabulary, the remaining £20 goes to the business that run the course, ergo the remaining £20.

However, the company that done my course (TTC 2000) is owned & ran by the west midlands police as a non profit organisation, all the money they bring in goes to charity (Staffordshire Air Ambulance). They are the ONLY non profit safer driver partnership in the UK apparently aswell. All the others companies are private contractors, hence people saying they had to pay £130++.

There was a guy on my course who got caught in a bus lane in London & had already done a speed awareness course, cost him £280 lol £220 outright profit for the company running the course.

BTW, you CANT fail these courses lol theres no test, no quiz etc etc you just sit there for four hours being told how to drive, watching videos, pointing out what you would consider a hazard etc. Mine was easy, as the vids on my course were all local roads around my area lol
