Alright guys, ive got the most annoying rattle under the bonnet, it not the engine tapping, its coming from the distributor cap? So obviously its the insides.. Any idea? before i start pulling it apart! :L
loose rotor arm, cracked cap, broken carbon brush if it has one, I am afraid you'll need to take the cap of which should be an easy job.
What engine? the 1.2/3 has bob weights in the dizzy, has happened to me a couple of times. Remove cap, re-fit weight. Job done.

Its the 1.2 in the luxe mate? Big black cap held on by 2 self tappers?
Ahh right so a lucas dizzy then. Is the rotor arm secure?

All looks fine to me, im not quite sure on what im doing, i hate the electrical side of things! Im fine with anything else haha!
you need to remove the rotor arm to see the weights john spoke of. they are pretty much the only thing that can rattle to be honest. take the cap and rotor oss and take a picture and post it up

hmmm looks as good as its going to. the springs have quite obviously gone weak but doesnt look enough to cause major issue. how much free play is there in the weights? as in how far can you pull them out before the spring acts on them?

Not loads, there's abit?
This could be it? replace the springs?
no such thing as replacement springs that i've ever found. is it just on tick over the rattling or does it increase with the revs?

Its fine when its on tick over, its when you increase the revs it gets louder..
its not the weights then imo. i recon you may have a sticky lifter instead. in fact when was the last time your oil was checked/changed

Its not the engine, thats all been done recently, its coming from the dizzy.
only reason i say that is i over revved mine the other day when the oil was very low and drained a lifter, and that only rattled when revved, on tick over it was quiet.

I can see where your coming from, how did you cure that? replaced the lifter? because im 95% certain its not the engine
i put more oil in it lol it was below the dipstick though to be fair. they do get blocked then they simply need cleaning
