View Full Version : V8 Transit
A mate of mine has decided to stick a V8 in his transit. Its his everyday van, and he uses it for work (mobile mechanic/agircultural engineer) so it had to be reliable. He's got the smiley faced transit with a 2.5di lump, which if you know vans is the most uneconomical least powerful engine ford have ever made. Especially when hes got all the weight in the back it struggles up hills on the motorway etc (lorries ovetake him). So the plan is V8 then LPG, same cost per mile (slightly cheaper and lots more power) no Congestion Zone cost (LPG), so a win win situation.
Its the same guy who helped me out with mine and built this:

So a Rover 3.9 V8 was sourced from the breakers, it was rebuilt (fast road cam added) a bellhousing adaptor was made to mate it to the transit gearbox. Scott built a stand and run the engine in on the floor so it could be done over a weekend, (as I say he needs the van for work) and as it stands its nearly done:

There are a few more of that truck on YouTube.
An old UPS Northrop Grumann Truck rebuilt with 750hp V8 etc... for Dale Jarrett's farewell "tour"
I have been on the hunt for one of these, but UPS UK don't seem to be very keen on letting one go just yet....
i read an article about the ups uk panel vans.. they have a 30 year design life & ups expect to just keep fitting new drivetrains to them, which will be quite often, as they were using merc sprinter engines..... lol lol lol

Not in those - they used the Vario big 4-pot engines which go on for ever and ever and ever....
Sprinter engines (pre-CDi) last well if serviced properly. I've seen ambulances (which don't get an easy life!) with 300K on them with original engines. I've seen 416CDi's last for less than 10K too!! There was a 54 plate at Mildenhall that had 540K on it when it was moved into the spares fleet almost four years ago... that had done nearly 500K when it's engine was replaced.
My own 312D did 140K before the head failed (went porous).
I have a Vito 122CDI now... that's only done 8000 miles so far.. and is under warranty so no worried!! Goes like f**k!
We had a 413cdi. It had 3 engines & 2 boxes, and several resprays to try to get rid of the rust, but it just popped up in different places.....now we have a transit

That's where you need to use Rustoleum paint!! It keeps the tin worm at bay. The 413CDi is the 4 pot isn't it? I've heard lots of woe about those.
4.6t van with the same engine as the vito!!!!!!!

merc sprinters are ****, ive had loads, rust like ****, gearboxs blow up, engines are gutless, jucy, and they hold no weight without the **** dragging along the floor, and new one you cant even drift in the wet, i had a fiat ducato witch was better and thats saying something.

v reg early one though it was rusty and the most uncomfy driving position ever it drifted well i didnt think it was too bad on fuel tbh

My old 312D sprinter handled well - though having the uprated anti-rollbars helps (ambulance spec).
You can't drift the new ones because of the ESP. My Vito has it, turn it on, and you can't get the tail out, but turn it off, and I'm sure donuts are on the menu - even if it is an auto!!
Having worked on Ivecos, Fiats, Renpigs, Vauxhall and Ford Vans, I wouldn't buy any of them. I had a Daily before I had the Sprinter, while it was reliable, it was s.l.o.w. The Sprinter was more economical, much more comfortable, much quieter, and a LOT faster.

i had a new fully loaded fiat ducato maxi 3.0l, top speed, 120mph, cruise control, built in sat nav, colour screen tv with reverse camera, and all the other extras from front fogs to metalic paint, alloys, was only £18000 , and was so good on fuel.
