Going by your username its an 85? has it been converted to run on unleaded? if a previous owner has always used unleaded additive and a new buyer doesn't know and fills it up with straight unleaded it will cause the valves to burn out, similar issues in a friends old nova, it resulted in flames coming out the carb lol
get the ignition timing checked :)

did you use a timing light ??
As above, you need a timing strobe to "check" the timing. You also need to turn the whole distributor not the cap. Are the leads in the correct firing order?

Yeah I turned the whole distributor and have the leads in the right order. Not messing about with it any more doing my conversion this weekend
