Vegetables with the kids!
Got 2 plastering/cement tubs with potatoes and onions outside.
Inside the conservatory (which is as hot as a greenhouse) we have tomatoes, cucumber and carrots germinating in trays.
Hopefully they will work! lol
Kids enjoyed it anyway:)

tj, the vast majority of tomato varieties are hybrids, and their seeds will not be much good for growing new plants from.

mind you, cherry tomatoes grown in a tub in your garden are by far the nicest

I have about 10 types growing at the moment. Ranging from very mild Jalapeño (2500 - 3000SHU) to One of the hottest in the world. (Dorset Naga Up to 1,598,227 SHU)

Also not much else we don't grow here....

A dorset naga ranges from around 600,000 SHU to 1,000,000 SHU. In other words mother trucking hot!!

EDIT: for reference, a scotch bonnet is around 100,000 SHU to 350,000 SHU

i've always used my own scale on chillis... it is based on my big sisters inability to actually cook....when she was in her teens she used to think she could make a really good chilli con carne.. but carnage was more like it.. my mum always bought schwartz cruched chilli in jars, but always swapped the little plastic lid with the small holes in across, well, big sis just opened a new jar & shook the complete contents in.. i took one bite, & ran outside and spat it out, then attempted to make my mouth stop hurting.. this involved a large tub of icecream, ice cubes, water & anything else i could think of, i lost the use of my taste buds for about a week..

meanwhile, my stubborn sister claimed it was fine & kept eating it, i have never seen sweat steaming off someones neck before, or since,

You should eat rice or other starchy (sp) food, this brings the heat down in your mouth.

Once again it depends on how hot you like things, I could make some thing that to me is not that hot (thus actually being able to taste it) but mowgli might hate it and think it has no taste. Its all a matter of your definition of hot!

But yes they are silly hot and no I would never even dream of eating one, Last time I cooked with one i just wiped it around the oil in the pan.(this was enough lol)

A few years...

Got a few on the go, Like to make chutneys etc

angus, i quite like some hot foods, but i am not a fan of hot for the sake of it, as in most peoples feeble attempts at a chilli con carnage.... a bloke i know always takes a pot of his famous c-c-c to every bbq/party/bash thru the summer, and its consistently shoite. my kids can make one with more flavour & depth, than he ever could.

But what most people who are not big chilli eaters fail to see is that somthing you define as tasteless due to it being too hot will have flavor for me.

There is a point in which too much IS too much even for a hot food lover like me!

Learning which spices warm the body is also key to cooking. There are many other spices other than the Chilli which give a good warming feeling!

I do understand what you mean but my perception (sp) of too hot will differ from the next person and so will the flavor.

The dorset naga has a very nice Smokey flavor which when used lightly is very tasty! Over use it and you the individual its too hot for will not be able to taste it.

I spent a long time finding chillis which have good taste, Much of them my mum would never touch.

I also know people who just eat hot food for the sake of it, IMO they have missed the point.

Try using other spices other than just chillis (you might in which case ignor this) There are a few spices that will complement Lamb mince as well as beef, Don't be afraid to try them.

Cumin goes with lamb better than beef (IMO) for example.

i have to admit, i love playing with herbs & spices in cooking to release different flavours, i did once have great fun liquidising chillies & putting them into a meat sauce no-body could work out what i'd done, but they loved it.

i think most people's perception of hot chillis is based on tipping into the dodgy kebab house at god knows what o'clock & getting their throat burnt out on their way home... when i was a poor student(i failed) i used to frequent a really good kebab house, and i was the only bloke who asked for a small amount of the chilli sauce... too much just murdered it.

Agreed Kebab house chilli sauce can be scary! But thats drunk peoples problem lol

In a strange way different spices seem to warm different parts of the body, always good fun to have a try at new things.

I am not a die hard chilli eater, however I seem to taste farm more (from chilli) than most people.

People tend to stay away from various spices due to lack of knowledge or price however I learnt from trying and spices if purchased from the correct place are very very cheap!

I used to be like that when I was younger, couldn't stand anything stronger than a Korma lol I'd be sweating like fook and downing pints of water, but now I love owt with a nice kick to it

Don't get me wrong it seems pointless when its so hot you can't actually enjoy the flavour, but some spices make food so much better.

What we have to remember though is that Indians and so on, use spices to disguise the flavour of off meat so in western cooking where we have much better meats available, killing the natural flavours with excessive spices is daft

I Think you are massively wrong here. You can't polish a turd, Rubbish mean is rubbish mean full stop(texture plays a part in this)

We (on our farm) produce meat about as good as it gets IMO, Me using various spices enhances it. Do it wrong and it will ruin it, all about knowing what goes with what.

I will never claim to be an expert however I know how not to ruin food.

Ill education when It comes to "non bland food" is the problem.
