Thought I'd better start a thread just to let everyone know I'm serious about my sport rebuild, had a lot going on last year and beginning of this which put a damper on any progress ,I now have some time spare so the last couple of weeks I started turfing all the accumulated junk out of the garage so I can move the sport in to make a start, anyway a couple of pictures of how it's looking at the moment.

So anyway went to Ketts in wisbech today and picked these up:)

2x inner & outer door repair panels, battery repair panel, o/s full sill & n/s arch repair panel, n/s sill & o/s arch repair out of stock at the moment but they are going to see if they can find some from another supplier for me.
I know that from reading a lot of the other projects on here that opinions vary about using arch repair panels but I'm on a tight budget and 1 genuine rear panel costs about the same as all these panels I bought today.
Also most of our spare cash each month is going on supporting our Daughter at Lincoln uni (English degree then into teaching hopefully) plus lots of wild nights out getting fairly wasted I gather lol.
Hoping to have another go at the garage tomorrow night, got stopped last night (wednesday) and tonight sorting the brakes on my sisters car. Will update when I get the garage finished & painted out.:thumb:
Nice to see another Sport being saved :) good luck with it all, your in the right place for advice etc
Good start getting all them panels, you might be able to find the others your after on ebay
Battery tray rust looks like it's set in :( maybe a idea to get another arch panel to use as the inner, looks like from the pic that its will need replacing

Way hay another sport being saved!!
Welcome to the site the guys are all very helpful.
I'm currently restoring a sport too, one bit of advice is you need lots of room for stripping them down.
What's your plans? Just keep original?

At the moment plans are to get it fully stripped and sort the body first, engine will need a full rebuild as well because it had heavy piston slap when I stopped using it :( think I'll have plenty of time to think about what to do with it while I'm sorting the body out though lol

How is the progress on this Tim now you have it in the garage? Any pics of the strip down?

Hi had painted the walls & ceiling week before last painted the floor last Sunday & ran out of paint  went to B&Q Monday they'd stopped doing the paint I'd used & only had Ronseal water based floor paint which I don't think would be as good as what I had (also I Refuse to pay 48 quid for a 5 litre tin ) so anyway my other half had a look round on Tuesday and was told that International paints had stopped trading :(, had a search on ebay found 5l for £22 including postage :) that arrived Friday & I just spent today painting the second coat, looks real good now  will take some pics and post, only problem is the tin says paint takes 5 days to fully harden so I've got to wait till Friday  before I can put some proper weight on it, I'm really itching to get started but I don't want to mess the paint up.:)

It's been in an old concrete sectional garage that I rebuilt down the bottom of the garden after we built an extension & new garage a few years ago so it's nice and dry to work on, I haven't tried to work on it in there as it's to narrow, with it parked close to the wall you can only open the door half way.

Looks a nice garage, almost like an operating theatre.
Just got to get disecting the shell ;)
What are you doing to move the shell around on, had you thought about a rollover jig?
Tim Harpley
05-06-12, 10:51 PM
I've seen them for sale on ebay either ready built or you can weld it together yourself, don't know whether that would be easier than trying make one from scratch? has anyone on here made one?

I think a couple of people have. Might be worth starting a new thread for info.
Is your garage a drive through? I notice you have two sets of doors, I had thought about doing that on my garage to access the top of my garden and build another garage up there. Might be moving next year so its not worth doing now but a double garage or room to build one is main priority when looking for the next house ;)
I love the garage, very nice in deed!
Your garage is amazing! lol i would love that space to work in

It will never stay that clean and tidy for long!

Thank's for comment's , and it is drive through so we can access the back garden without going through the house.

Hole in the boot, also the seem isn't good where it welds to the back panel :(.
http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h433/Tim_Harpley/Sport%20Project/PICT3779.jpg
Think it should be repairable as I've seen some others like it on here, it'll just take a bit of time though :)

Battery tray is not pretty, shame its gone into the bulkhead and firewall :( Looks like you have some patching to do, better you than I.
Glad to see you getting stuck in, just need to keep up the motivation(and funds!) To get it looking good again.

Bit of an update, just got the headlining to take out inside, windows out, bumpers off, lights off, think I'll need a back panel it's a bit soft, not sure what to do about the front
2 holes under radiator rest is solid not good round n/s headlight.
took some pictures.

Need to clean up to get a proper look when engine & suspension off, if it's just just the 2 holes in the crossmember would you just plate it and replace the headlight surrounds or fit the whole front?
Whole front panel IMO
Saves a lot of work and will have a better finish.

Seconded
Only issue would be getting the proper early mk1 front panel with the small hole around the towing eye, see abznovasport build thread to see his

Well didn't get a lot done over summer but finally made a start again, had a clear out on Sunday and moved all the parts into the shed, been spending about an hour each night taking the rest of the front end apart, had to cut the n/s engine mount bolt out, it was corroded solid. Been removing the sound deadening from the floor with a heat gun tonight, will take some more pictures when I start cutting and welding, :) .
Ordered a new front end today as well.
Great to see your saving the Sport Tim! You have some work on your hands there, keep up the good work , have you had the car long?
Tim Harpley
29-11-12, 12:10 AM
It was 7 Months old when I bought it, got stood up when the engine started to knock and we needed a bigger car cause the kiddies came along, treated it all with cavity wax couple of years before we stopped using it, problem was out of sight out of mind and the next think was yikes! how did it get that bad.

http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h433/Tim_Harpley/Sport%20Project/PICT3896.jpg
Nearside in much better condition fortunately :thumb:
That's it for tonight hoping to do some more Thursday, I've found out why it's been rusting so bad now I've started cleaning it down, couldn't believe that when I scraped the seam sealer off it was bare metal underneath  , would have thought it would have been dipped first then seam sealered :(.
Will try and post more often than I have been, want to get the new battery tray trimmed to size on Thursday so I can work out how to shape the firewall repair, if I'm successful I'll take some more photos :thumb:.

Then after 2 trips to casualty 1st had my head stuck together with super glue after catching it on the jagged rear arch 2nd crushed my right middle finger flesh with a slide hammer, decided it had to go.

To here to get rid of the corrosion & paint, got fed up trying to clean it down with wire wheels & flap discs. Its been away since the end of may, they are really busy at the moment its a family operation been going for a long time in Terrington St John in Norfolk only about 5 miles from where I live so its quite handy, I don't mind waiting though as I knew they wouldn't be able to start it straight away as I hadn't booked it in for a specific time.

Look a lot better now and as you can see they even give it a coat of primer to stop flash rusting.
Had a phone call tonight to say most of the shell is now done just got some panels to do and hopefully ready for collection Thursday night.

Also stripped the Engine down as well, found No 3 big end bearing had spun in the rod also a lot of play in the bores so a re-bore and crank grind is needed.:(
Can I have some opinions as to should I keep it 1300 oversize or have it taken out to 1400cc its still the original Engine would it be devalued if its not 1300 any more ?

Can't give up now, had a phone call tonight picking the shell up tomorrow night.
Great work Tim, nice to see another Sport in Norfolk, also I hadn't realised there was a blasting place Kings Lynn way, are you pleased with what they have done so far ?

I would rebore it to a 1400.

I have never seen carbs in such a dire state; be interesting to see how they fair after blasting.
Tim Harpley
15-07-13, 11:29 PM
I'm pleased with what was done, all the underside & engine bay, all the window openings and inside floor, door & tailgate frames, there are certain areas they won't touch like the unsupported panels (top of roof, bonnet, door & tailgate) Have done in the gutters and round the door frames though, they said if they try & do the roof & bonnet it would ripple, they have been going for 25 years so know what they are doing.
All the remaining old paint I'll remove with paint stripper when I get up to that stage.
They also coat the bare metal with a Zinc based single pack primer to stop flash rusting.
Will try to get some pics of the shell this week, the process has done what I wanted and shows up all the areas where the rust has perforated the shell, got quite a long task ahead sorting it all.
Here's a couple of pics of the carbs, manifold & air box glass bead blasted.

Really pleased with the result, now got to strip them down to clean and fit new gaskets and repaint the air box.
Does anyone know what paint is best to use on the air box.

They look much better. Ultrasonic cleaning is good for cleaning the carbs internally when they are stripped.
Looking forward to seeing pics of the shell.

Do yourself a favour Tim and get some primer on the bare metal, maybe leave the corroded areas, (weld through primer possibly) it will alll go rusty as soon as it gets damp, unless your planning to reblast it.
Blasted metal will go rusty from the sweat from a fingerprint!! in a few minutes!!
Spent many years shot blasting tractors, etc

Wow, you got some holes to patch. The blasting has left a nice finish to work from. Did you say it has had a zinc primer on to stop flash rusting?
That drivers chassis leg looks a little worse for wear, I think Wardy is slling a new one on here if you were interested along with some inner wings.
Looking forward to seeing the repair work and welding on this one. You have a hell of a task, glad to see you tackling it. +rep required I think.
Keep the pics and updates coming.

this has rotton exactly the same places as mine did. Its perfectly salvagable with some time and effort.
get it on a spit and get the zinc primer and paint gun out. As said it will rust almost instantly.

Sorry, chassis leg he has is the other side.
Also, I would remove the remaining seam sealer as it does a good job of hiding rust.

It's been sprayed with a zinc based primer so I'm hoping it will stop any flash rusting while I'm working on it, I was hoping that the seam sealer I had left on would disappear with the blasting Rich, because it looked quite thin, I was wrong:roll: so I'll have to get the scraper out again lol

It is surprising how resilliant seam sealer is. The shot just bounces off it.

Yet water can just slide straight under it...

From my recent contact with Tim its certainly not an abandoned project, more a case of other things impacting on something of this scale. I am sure he will update soon!

It's not abandoned just suspended while home improvements were happening, these are nearly finished now so I decided to get a couple of quotes to have the bodywork done, one was £ 3500 the other was £4-5000  my pockets aren't deep enough for that at the moment lol so the Mrs sent me out in the garage last weekend to make a start on it again, and I'm now of out there tonight to do a bit, will make a bit of progress and then post some more pictures soon :thumb:
