Removing the standard gear knob

Right I've managed to get the rubber gear knob off but it has left the plastic part from inside it on the gear stick. I'm wanting to re use the whole thing so how can I get this off without breaking it.
Any help would be great.

Put a pair of grips under the plastic but without gripping the shaft and knock it up with a hammer. Hit the body of the grips to prevent damaging the plastic.
Did you smack yourself in the face with the gear knob when you pulled it off? lol

Na it was first turning on the plastic and then it slowly moved up the gear stick until it came off. How's it attached? Glue or on a thread
