8 of us set off about 4 pm sat afternoon for some night laneing, all was going well till we went to go up chinley steps about 12.30 1am in the morning.

we have all been telling this person to put some relocation cones on as he will regret it one day, well got about a quatre of the way up the steps and the springs poped out but didnt relocate not good, bent both rear tiebars snaped the spring mounts off the axle and ripped the brake pipe flexi off.

couple of pics not the best buy the time we got off the lane it was gone half 3.

none of this would of been done if the spent 30 quid on some relocation cones.

we pulled the axle back with another landy and poped the springs back in, took off the tiebars and bent them as straight as we could then ratchet strapped and cable tied the spring mounts back on. as look would have it one of the lads had a flexi pipe so we fitted that and adjusted the biast valve so just about all the braking was on the front.

whinched up tight so we can do some repairs, you can see why its called chinley steps.

funny enough rufas said the same thing after he did this lol.

mowgli just make sure he has relocation cones and also some cranked arms front and rear as the original items are soft as chocolate.

i watched that 4x4 is born show & they were going on about cranked arms being an absolute necessity

yes when you lift them the diffs turn up in effect. all they do is turn the diff to its original position.

theres different degrees of crank depanding on how much lift you go for. dont go for the cheaper ones we run qt cranked arms for years and never had a problem.

they probly talked about wide angle props but theres a cheaper way to do it using a mix of landrover parts

the main reason for cranked radius arms, is to correct the castor angle. I had a disco lifted 3" and had no issues, as do 99% of folk with lifted trucks. I'd spend the £200 on other, better things :thumb:

this landy has about a 2" or 3" lift. it still has straight arms. i'll check the castor

So long as it drives in a straight line (by landrover standards) and the wheels self center I'd not worry much. I believe the castor angle changes 0.25 degrees per inch lifted

this one is not intended for much road use, he is planning to get it re-taxed as a tractor, trailer it to off road places, & blast it round the farm on the red stuff.

mines only lifted one inch ish on hd suspension, had it in a few predicaments but never popped a spring out!

suppose its all down to how much you want to spend and what your going to do with the vehicle,

hmmm could do with some new shocker turrets though, and maybe one of those side exit exhaust from devon 4x4! lol NO get the nova done lol lol

at stock hight caster is 3 deg positive so a 3 inch lift will give caster of about 0.8 deg negative. yes you can correct this with out buying cranked arms.

however your front pinion angle will be all out aswell putting the u.j through about 7 degrees work angle with 3 inch lift which will cause some nice vibes when driving it. never mind the bump steer it will also create

easy question would you be willing to spend 200 quid and no that the caster is correct the pinion/ u.j angle is correct and there stronger or not bother and struggle with bump steer vibrations and a vehicle that wanders all over the place. also like said before rears are soft as anything and can be bent very easy.

fitted caster correction bushes on my mates disco 2 thats lifted 2" and that made it a different vehicle to drive.pretty much turns the axle and changes the pinion angle
