View Full Version : My nova (hotrod) of 13 years!
Here is my nova that ive been building for the last 13 years(ish). Unfortunatly due to a lack of cash flow its just been stored for the last 5 of them! :( However things have changed now and hope to be busy with it again soon.

This was the engine it had in:-
1.6 fully rebuilt bottom end
Lightened flywheel
Ported and gas flowed 1.4 head
Race/Rally cam
4-1 exhaust
twin 40 webbers
It was quick enough(sounded really nice!) but way too thirsty!

However this is how it stands now and has for the last 5 years!
On the plus side I have this to drop in it now!:)

Was wondering what you guys think?
90's styled nova :)
never seen a mk1 nova with quad lights till now hmmm
love the wide arches on it :thumb:
what bumper was on it? custom one ? looks like it had a cossie lip on it
Hit the nail on the head mate! custom bumper made to fit the cossie splitter!:d
Think the headlights were quad conversions but not too sure (been a long time!)
Wouldnt matter anyway both the grille and lights have been modified to fit the front end!
Ultimatlly the plan would be a full fiberglass front end all 1 piece but not too sure thats gonna happen now!:(
Times have changed mate. Bodykits are so 90s! Put the car back to standard lad! :thumb:
kool :)
look like oz alloys?
Times have changed mate. Bodykits are so 90s! Put the car back to standard lad! :thumb:
yea follow the crowd and mk2 gsi rep it on speedlines :/ i like the arches and that front bumper, its different.
pie you not seen mine with them lights?
I was expecting some crazy roof chopped, rusty hot rod with a nova shell in there somewhere lol :(
Car looks like its from the 90's and i like it. Like the uniqness, and although not to fully my taste, i respect the fact you have thought outside the box especially with that front bumper.
The car will never go back to standard gonna finish it as hommage to the 90's  (my era! haha)
The alloys are milli miglia. I laughed so hard when the guy in the shop said they wouldnt fit on a nova!lol
its different. and that is what is good.... as above, don't follow the rest of the crowd.... there are quite a few bits that are not to my taste, but you'd probably hate bits of my car too
get it restored & wake up a few people at billing with it.
ps. i like the colour
stick to your plans and it could look tidy fella

The ones on Bubba's I think are Morettes? The ones on hotrod's look more like possibly Manta ones made to fit.
No mine were def for a nova came with lights and grille

This was how they originally came (without the colour!)
looks cool mate. i see its got a northen ireland reg on it
I like it bar the front bumper, colour is really nice.
looks cool mate. i see its got a northen ireland reg on it
Was the plate it came with! never been to ireland in my life! I hear its a nice place though!;)
i think its cool. not a fan of the m3 mirrors though, they are too curvy for the squarness of the body. your car car your choice.
the 90s nova were the best. its what inspired me in the first place.
tim
Always thought that about the mirrors!
your right about the 90s nova though got my first one 16 years ago and owned one ever since!:)

That would be right mate I remember now! lol
Novadose, thats it. For some reason all I could think of was the abyss kit and wondered why I couldn't find any pics lol
So it's been a while since I did anything to it so here goes apart from taking anything of value out of it (that the rats will eat!) home!
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20120929_201644.jpg
I've been rubbing down the engine bay ready to paint! After removing any imperfections and unwanted holes ( for the clean look!)

The way I see it another couple of weeks and I'll be ready to put it in primer! :D
I forget how many holes are in the Nova engine bay...
Is it wrong that i think it looks better pink lol
how have i never seen this? it looks ace in its day and i hope you make it as good a second time round.
Rick
Is it wrong that i think it looks better pink lol
I'll give you the paint code for yours if you like it! lollollol
how have i never seen this? it looks ace in its day and i hope you make it as good a second time round.
Rick
Wish it was just the 2nd time round mate this has been done 4-5 times now! lol Think I know every nut and bolt on it now! :d
Right it's been a while since I updated this WIP so here goes. Majority of the time has been spent on bodywork although progress has been a lot slower than I'd hoped what with the dark nights closing in and being really busy at work. Unfortunately weekends seem to be the only free time to work on it along with the many other jobs I have to do! :(
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20121012_172404.jpg
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20121027_152514.jpg
I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! lol Since the temperature is dropping it's not looking like I'm gonna be able to get it in to paint any time this year! So I've started stripping the rest of the things I need off!
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20121027_152525.jpg
Really not looking forward to sorting this little lot out. :wtf: Its been 6 years since I made this harness up! lol
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20121027_143825.jpg
I've also been working on the suspension parts in my spare time at work, stripping the old paint off ready to re-paint.

http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20121006_083132.jpg
And finally here's a sneaky peek of the interior as it stands today! lol
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20121027_152539.jpg
So that's it hopefully the next time I update it'll all be painted! :d

like the door cards mate :thumb:
Loving the speaker builds, make mine look subtle lol
Yeah the pink one was mine mate. That's the blue one just rebuilt! (2.0 if you like!) lol with the door builds I asked what the biggest size speakers fitted was and went for the next size up! :p Sounds immense! lol can't hear any rattles or squeeks! :d
Holy fcuk! The size of those kick pods!
Looks great mate, and I too like that you are keeping the car how you like it, and not how fashion states you 'should'. There isn't enough of us around imo.
Where in the NE are you from? I may have seen your Nova at Spillers/Team Valley/Arnison/Bish/Boro/Seaton Carew etc back in the day. lol
BTW, were they TSW Stealths on it when it was pink?
Did you ever come up to Knockhill when it was Pink? Seems familar

Really 90's mate, love it, reminds me of when I was younger :)
Possibly did see me round spillers, was a propper "boy racer" back in the day! lol and yes when it was pink it was running on stelths! got them from a mate who had them on his cav, they didn't fit, that's where the need for the wide arch kit came from. When I first fitted the wheels and let it down off the jack the car rested on them (by about an inch and a half!)
So naturally I made the car fit the wheels! lol. I did come up to knockhill for a show (nearly rolled it on the track overtaking a diesel! lol DOH!).
I built it in the 90's so I figure why not finish it as a tribute to the 90's! I could strap on a GSI bumper and some speedlines and make it like every other nova (no offence to them that have! I like them but what's the point been there, done that!) but why follow the crowd! You gotta be different man! ;)
Really cant wait till it's finished! There's always gonna be "haters" but who cares it's mine! :d and I like it! ;)

Areet! Nee answer on the location eh marra? Nee bosh! lol
Aye, I do think I have seen it down there way back when. Did you used to get to the block yards down Seaburn too?
Sorry dude I'm local enough to the town but no I don't think I used to get down seaburn! (used to get around a lot back in the day!) was a long time ago and had a lot of alcohol (and few other things since then)! lol settle down Like an old man now! lol :( Will def see it at the shows this year though! :)

Looked awesome in pink lol
Love the door cards, will look very nice when done even though its not to my taste!
If get it in some kind of paint before its to cold and damp. Rust will set in even just with damp air...
Will your legs and feet fit around the speakers?
Yeah mate snug as a bug! Its surprising how much room there is down there! lol

Bloody hell that was a long time ago! The first pic was with the leather trim I swapped Steve for the bucket seats that started the whole re-build! lol lol lol
Bit worried everyone seems to think it looked better in pink though! lol
lol lol
whats rims are they buddy?
Milli-miglia! That's about all I can tell you mate not even sure they make that style anymore, I know they make some similar but haven't seen any others in years! :d

Not sure on the front bumper these days though :s
Yeah Mark was thinking about that! Don't worry though I have a plan, just need to get it running first! lol
Possibly mate really not sure bought them like 12-13 years ago! had a lot of vodka through the system since then! lol
So its been a while since I updated this post. Since the start of the year I've had to build a new garage (since the last one was ready to fall down!). It was a bit of a job just digging the car out and moving it since the whole front end was stripped and on axle stands. http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20120415_101929.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20120415_101929.jpg.html)Finally managed to get it on the truck then home to her rightful place. http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20140902_175015.jpg http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20140902_184456.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20140902_184456.jpg.html)
Since getting her home I've refitted the motor for the final mock up, and im pleased I did since it looks like I haven't quite "shaved" the chassis leg enough. http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20140924_190621.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20140924_190621.jpg.html)
Even just clearing all the stuff out of the interior has made a huge difference (can see the final picture again. Haha) http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20140904_182508.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20140904_182508.jpg.html) http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20140904_182522.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20140904_182522.jpg.html)
I felt a bit guilty chopping up an original uncut loom for her but these are the things you have to do if you want to tuck the wires I suppose. This is how she stands as of last night while I was busy trying to work out where to stash the oil cooler. http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20141010_200526.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20141010_200526.jpg.html)
Was planning on re-fitting the original XE cooler but after seeing what other people had done (looked much nicer) I decided to go shopping and buy a new cooler.
Just had a wee read through your thread pal and I like the 90s look lol lairy bodykit in your face paint and mega sound system, I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on this thread in the future :-)
So it's been a while since I posted any updates on here so here goes. Since the last time the work has been getting done as and when I've had the time. I still haven't worked out where to fit the oil cooler but I have bought an aftermarket one. http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150205_182116.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150205_182116.jpg.html)
I have also managed to tuck the coil up behind the engine to keep the inner wings clutter free. http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20141014_194802.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20141014_194802.jpg.html)
I hope this doesn't get wet up thete and cause me running problems.
I have also rose jointed my gear linkage (using the "how to" guide on here) and fitted a short shift. It still needs setting up but I'll do that once the engines up and running. http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/Screenshot_2014-10-12-11-54-51.png (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/Screenshot_2014-10-12-11-54-51.png.html)

It looks a bit rough but I'll trim the bolts and tidy it up when I get the parts powder coated.
I have also started on the bodywork by finally getting round to making a new bonnet. The vents have been fitted properly this time!lol

can't wait to get this painted and fitted.
I'm sick of buying 2nd hand drive shafts that I'm promised will fit and turn out not too so i stopped messing about and bought a new pair of equal legnth shafts from LMF. Hope to get them fitted this weekend along with the new coilover's I bought off someone on the fb site.
All in I don't think I have much more to buy for it now. It's all just a matter of polish/paint and sticking it all together!! :d :thumb:
Looking good, nice place to hide the coil too.
I've been busy tonight and finally got my shafts built up. I used the old boots off the doner shafts for now just until I strip it back down for powder coating.
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150624_184143.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150624_184143.jpg.html)
I got them fitted for now. After all these years it's good to see a set of shafts that fit! lol
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150624_185014.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150624_185014.jpg.html)
Unfortunately I misjudged the space needed for the shaft mount and had to take off the coil until i can modify the mounting bracket a bit.
What and why? Shaft mount?
The mount for the long shaft on the equal length shafts just pushes on the bracket i made to mount the coil to.
LMF have equal length shafts in stock now? Good progress.
Had to wait a couple of weeks but since I was in no hurry lol it wasn't a problem, but yeah they got them for me! :thumb: :d
Finally made the decision to just leave the oil cooler where it was.
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150627_152556.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150627_152556.jpg.html)
Figured it would get enough air through there and i didn't have to remove my slam panel support. Hope to get the pipes crimped for it on Monday then its ready to pop the engine out again  to re-do the chassis leg for more clearance at the alternator.
I also picked this up off ebay this week just to start and tone down the lairy bodykit a bit.
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150627_152529.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150627_152529.jpg.html)
Thought I'd take a little break from fitting the motor today since the next step is to whip it back out again and I'm not doing that this side of billing.
I got my new back bumper delivered today (it's a little more worse for wear than I'd hoped :( but when life gives you lemons nd all that! lol ). This is how the existing back bumper looks:
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150701_171008.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150701_171008.jpg.html)
I've fitted the new bumper but i think its going to take a little more fettling than i thought. There's way too much gap under the rear lights.
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150701_183248.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150701_183248.jpg.html)
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150701_183254.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150701_183254.jpg.html)
I was thinking about just moving the mounting brackets down to raise the bumper up a bit. All in i don't think its going to turn out half bad once its painted.
http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg609/HOT-ROD77/HOTROD/20150701_183540.jpg (http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/HOT-ROD77/media/HOTROD/20150701_183540.jpg.html)
If anyone has had this problem before and has an easier fix I'd be happy to hear it. :thumb:
