View Full Version : Archie's Nova GSi Restoration Project!

Archie

Some of you may remember my white GSi i bought in 2009 for £80!
Regretably sold it on to a mate who stripped it and scrapped it.
Kicked myself ever since and have always been on the look for another Nova since.

About 3 months ago i done a deal with my old Golf GTI Turbo with Stevie78 on here for his tidy SRi, sadly it wasnt to be as the water pump gave way on the Golf as Stevie was taking it home, being local to me and knowing Stevie for a good while i consider him a friend, so done the right thing and swapped cars back, i repaired the Golf and sold it on, and Stevie sold his Nova on, regretably a week before my Golf went.

Anyway, chatting with Vaughan last week whilst admiring his new build he mentioned a GSi local to us he knew of that was for sale locally to us, he gave me the details, 30 minutes later i was looking at the car and by dinner time that night i returned deposit in hand.

Got it home tonight so here she is, i'm a mechanic for a living so it'll be legal and out soon as :D

Spec -
Piper cam & Pulley, Remus exhaust, Pipercross cone, Magnecore leads.
Half cage, 1 seat (GTE)
OZ Superturismo's, G-Max lowering kit.

Got a rough idea where i'm going with it.

Is that the silk violet one? I think it's a valver, it used to sit in Catrine a think.

Your only 10 minutes up from me, is your GTE on the road yet?

I'm tempted just to fling this on the road and enjoy the good weather in it and take it to bits around September time.

Archie
28-04-12, 07:45 PM
Just going to MOT it and run it for the good weather then probably in my garage and strip it bare over winter.

Some of the repair work isnt great so going to get most of it redone to a better standard.

Aye its been around here a while.
It was a shame but at least i get to put my name to something rather than buying a car built by someone else.

g111mds
04-05-12, 12:19 AM
It had at least two owners in Coylton. It was a neighbour of my parents who had it a few years back and from memory he bought I down in the London area. Haven't seen it for quite a while so good to see its still about.

Jamie

Archie
04-05-12, 09:22 AM
Do you know how long its been up here for then?

Cheers for the info, forgot you were in that area.

g111mds
04-05-12, 12:07 PM
Not sure, but must be 4 or 5 years at least I think. You can make a request to the dvla for details of all the previous owners which costs, from memory, £5. I did that with my latest used car and the information made interesting reading. If you do that, you'll be able to find out where all its been and for how long.

Jamie

Archie
04-05-12, 12:47 PM
Ideal, i assume it'll be on the DVLA site.

I remember it sitting in Ayr behind Kerr & Smith, used to have a shoppin list in the rear quarter windows?

g111mds
04-05-12, 03:55 PM
yeah, i think it was either a form or write to them. details will be on the website or call them.

the lad that had it worked at kerr & smith so thats why it would have been there. don't remember the shopping list though!

Some progress.

Took the half cage out, where the feet were welded on was a bit ****ty underneath.

Vaughan has kindly offered for me to remove the inner arches from a spare shell he has before it goes as there solid on it, that way it keeps it tidy and original.

Yeah definatly looking and feeling more like a car now.

Going to plate the rot for now to get it on the road soon.

Need to source rear doorcards & front seats at the very least.

Aye Vaughans got his MK1 all built up and running the T40's thats what he was down to show me tonight as he was running it without the T40's for the 1st few weeks.

The K plate MK2'a stripped down, undergoing a resto or getting the chop, unsure on that front.

Archie
21-06-12, 10:58 PM
So finally got some time to myself to get more done with it.

Got the shoes, new fittings, cylinders, handbrake cables & rear wheel bearings done.

After snapping a nipple in my Corsa 1.6 brakes my mate donated me a set if 2.0 brakes with new pads and discs.

So plan is tomorrow to fit them upfront, fit new horn, replace an indicator bulb, bolt in my only seat and go for an MOT.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/Dirtworld/NovaGSI2/d78bb919.jpg

The green gooey stuff is a **** hot grease we use at my secondary employment for motorcycle steering head bearings, so should protect the bearings adequatly.

Iain
21-06-12, 11:54 PM
Nice work, new rear brake setups are a winner but the costs soon mount up don't they.

Archie
22-06-12, 12:09 AM
I cant moan at the price tbh.

£55 for all the parts i fitted tonight, and i gave my mate £10 beer money for the 2.0 brakes.

Perks of being in the trade i guess, it needed cables so would have been daft just replacing them for the sake of an extra hours work and £50, had a cylinder pop on one of my Corsa's before and it wasnt pleasant.

Piece of mind more than anything, glad i done it because the nearside cylinder had been leaking.

Archie
22-06-12, 12:42 PM
Pissing down so got the waterproofs out and cracked on.

Cheers mate, probably tax it at the end of next week.

I put a new set of plugs in it yesterday as well, starts and idles a lot better now.

Will get a GM oil filter on payday amd give it an engine flush, oil & filter change before i take it any distance.

Going to do the trackrod ends and bottom balljoints during the week then do the alignment at work once i tax it.

Now i just need to stock up on panels for the winter resto and source interior.

Thought i'd best update since i dug up my 1st GSI.

Interior is mostly fitted now, front seats to bolt in, and digi dash wiring to tidy up.

Unsure when its coming out as i may be unable to renew my trade policy for a decent price and struggling with decent classic quotes :(

Bringing things uptodate.

Went a trip to Kendal about 3 weeks ago to get an interior off NoVaBoOt26.
Top lad, was worth the journey.

Got rear seatbelts from Colin Smith (Again great guy to deal with)

Having left it parked up since it passed its MOT i got cracking with it.

Just have the rear belts to fit, and screws to find for the boot plastics.

Start of the night (How i left previously, trying to trace back dead wiring to see if it was relevant)

Yeah thats the part buddy.

The seats sit in them fine, soon as i fold them down they pop out.
Just seems logical there should be a cover or something holding them in the mount.

Yip that's the one, the other 2 are the ones for each side.

The centre one should have a plastic insert that goes round the pegs on the seat. It's not essential but stops any vibration noise and keeps the seats in line.

whats the plans for it ?

Archie
12-11-12, 11:11 AM
Thanks mate, the other side is a bit rotten around the airiel inspection plate after some poking seems the underseal was holding it together.

Due to me having less working space than i thought i'm going to do it and end at a time.

Full front panel replaced.
Battery tray replaced (It's been patched)
Theres plates either side of the turrets but for my own reassurance there getting cut out and redone.

Engine will get rebuilt and cleaned up alongside the shell work but wont go back in until its pretty much finished.

All arms/rollbars/axle etc are getting powdercoated and polybushed.

Underside will be painted and treated, sills replaced and pumped full of waxoyl along with any other orifice i can fill.

Arches have been replaced but not a great job so either replacement quarters or just live with them and tidy up the wonky filler work, will get my panelbeater friend to deliver his opinion.

Rolled it out to degrease and wash down the bay.

Rolled it back in and proceeded to my loft to tidy it up a little and make space to put the interior and some panels.

Have a Twingo to service in the morning and a few odd jobs to do then i'll get back to it and start removing the interior completely.

Split the box off yesterday, drained the oil, removed diff pan to make sure it was totally empty.

Will be ordering a gasket set for the gearbox, then giving it a lick of silver and sitting it out the way.

Definetly cant wait to get it out, waiting on complete sills as well (Originals have been patched so would rather just replaced them totally.

Trying to source quarter panels, found a place listing 1 in stock and the other out of stock.

Just to bring it all uptodate -

Top end rebuild set & new headbolts to take care of the engine side of things.
Just ordered a complete Flo-Flex polybush set.

Collecting a GM nearside quarter from Matthew172 later in the month.
Managed to track an offside GM one down from Germany so should recieve it in the next 10 days.

Archie

Aye am chuffed like, just need to order sills but they are readily available through my local factors.

Dont know whether it's be worthwhile tracking down a GM slam panel.

Depends how things go in general, if i get a better paid job anytime soon it will speed things up.

I'm in no hurry by any means i'd rather not cut any corners, hence going to the extent of replacing the quarters when to be honest they could be rubbed down and the filler work redone.

It'll be ready when it's ready lol at least i can crack on with doing the engine while i gather panels etc.

Nice find mate is there many new panels for it to go on or it not too bad? It getting a full spray?

Archie
20-01-13, 05:44 PM
Doing both quarters because someones done a cowboy of replacing the arches.
Got a new slam panel there, current ones been patched.
Going to replace the sills as they have been patched.
Wings will be replaced.
Also got a new battery tray there for it.

All previous structural welding/repairs will be cut out and redone properly and tidily.

Collecting the other rear quarter at the end of the month.

I could probably have got it painted and got on with it but i would know what it was really like so plan is do it once and do it right, its lasted 22 years, so i'd like to see the same again out of it.

Edit - Aye i'll be getting fully sprayed.

Are you managing to find gm panels ok or you going to be using patern stuff?
Glad your doing it properly as gsi's are few an far between so is good to see a mint one now and again :)
Will you be attending shows etc once its done? And is it staying 1.6?

Archie
20-01-13, 06:08 PM
The quarters are genuine, one from a member on here and one from Germany.

Slam panel & battery tray are Hadrians/Imperial panels, and the sills will be from the same place.

Ideally i'd like to use all genuine but i'll just take whats available, was only going to use Genuine quarters so at least i'm not held back with them now.

Ideally i'd like a genuine slam panel, aside that i dont mind using Hadrian/Imperial panels for the others.

Waiting on an email back about genuine wings but dont mind getting good condition used genuine ones.

Engine is staying 1.6, have a top end rebuild set there and will replace water pump/timing belt at same time.

And i'll be using it as much as i possibly can once its done so we'll see what shows fit around my weekends off!

Andy
