Evening,

Can anyone help advise the best oil to put in my nova gsi?

Near enough standard engine, with almost 80000 miles.

Always used 10/40 mobil is this best?

Thanks

I know someone who works for an oil testing company and additive developer and Mobil 1 always comes top!

it may well do, but mobil 1 is just too high a grade for a little mass produced vauxhall engine

/\ this. I use Morris 10W40 semi in my XE, as it's what the engine was designed for.

Indie tests or funded ones ? ;)
I've seen it rank pretty low on the score chart in many tests, and for its price you can buy far better oils ( or spend less for the same quality) lol

we are buying texaco high grade 15w40 diesel engine oil (for euro4) for £1.50+vat/Litre in 205l barrels.. most of these name brand oils are a fancy can & some clever advertising..

silkolene oil (now FUCHS) was legendary for being made from recycled old oil, and it was the only oil allowed on concorde. it had a fabulous reputation back in the day, no hype, just honest oil. they made loads for oe aftermarket too

Vaux Oil for a Vaux engine. If you're a trade member you can get 4 x 5L containers of 10w40 oil for £38.

I just went to get a price for this, admittedly not a trade member and they wanted 1 x 5l £38. Is this right?

look, just get it from wilko/motor factors etc. halfords & main dealer retail are scary money... its even cheap on ebay.

Course 1x5L for £38 isn't right if Tekky says it's 4x for the same money lol Its this stuff you'll get, just find a friendly dealer and ask for 'trade club' prices: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5L-GENUINE-Engine-Oil-10W-40-10-40-Semi-Synthetic-VAUXHALL-OMEGA-98-04-/200722674189?pt=UK_Vehicle_Oils_Lubricants_Fluids&hash=item2ebc00f20d

With trade it's nearly free, if you are joe pubelick then you get raped.

Trade is a huge difference in price. I went and asked (out of huge interest) what a dizzy cap for the SEH costs. Trade is £54 which is still steep/vertical. But the re-sale price for a garage to charge the customer would be £184 lol

Halfords Trade give you 50% off parts and 30% off oils etc. A dizzy cap from Halfords for the same engine would be like £10 - £15 with a trade card.

I found halfords to be variable with its trade discount.

When I asked that was what they told me (which is probably wrong lol)

I am reliably informed that Vauxhall's oil is made by Fuch's ;)

It depends what you buy, bulbs are like 80% off because halfords mark them up massively to begin with, oil could well be 30 tbh, all tools are 20%, everything else is about 0-15 or so ;p

euros are alright if you needed it half hour ago, and they can be cheaper on german stuff, but generally GSF wins there lol Dealers are random as hell, best example was a full head set for £60ish, and stem seals for a 24v V6 at £12 each.

Dealer cost plus 10% for me on Vauxhall parts and at all other franchises in group. Trade on everything else :)

50% off what????

when i worked in agric spares, we'd get trade people saying such things & we'd ask them for specific prices... what we always found was their current supplier had loaded the price by 15-20% before discounting....

i work for a vauxhall dealer and only get 10%, robbing T***s!
the guy i worked with when i was his apprentice is now self employed so he lets me get stuff with his trade club discount.......saves a few quid!

we sell quite a lot of vauxhall oil to various garages because its cheaper for them to buy trade club in bulk than from factors most of the time..

oh and to answer the question, 15w40!lol

50% off what????

As above Mowgli - I recently got a new alternator belt for the SR. £3.89 standard price I got it for £1 odd. New stat for the Nova cost £6 odd I got it for £3 odd. Leads for the Nova again were £15 ish and I got it for £7.50 ish. Plugs for the LET where £10.49 standard got them for £5 odd with trade.

Not everything is 50% but all of the above items I've had recently have all been 50% discount give or take.

Thanks guys.

£15.00 for 5l from vauxhall. That £25 cheaper. With some plugs and oil filter etc £23.

Air filter is obsolete though.
