We need a little compressor for running a surface mount placement machine and also the pasting machine. Now we also want to play with the air tools we have so need something that is vaguely quiet, can pump into a ferking great storage tank we have (its about a pallet long by 18" diameter) and then into some solid tube into the production room with various air line outlets.

Any recommendations of decent reliable compressors that'll do the job?

anything by this firm is top draw, we had a silent screw compressor at a firm i used to work for refubishing alloy wheels, always kept up up with all the air tools and a MASSIVE sand blaster, and paint booth all at once, never had to wait for it to build up, and the biggest bonus is screw comps are silent

heres alink, dont expect it to be cheap mind you, but as with all things in life, you pay for what you get....

as above screw type is the way to go if you have money to spend on one but a normal compressor is just as good if you get bigger one
but for your aplication i would go screw
