Major electrical short somewere

Ok so Theres been problems with the electrics on a friends nova and he asked me to post on here

When he presses the brake pedal the side lights light up

Also the brake lights on the back don't light up when he brakes

Also sometimes randomly when he goes to turn the car off and turn the ignition off the car keeps running if he's got his foot on the brake pedal but if his foots not on the brake pedal the car turns off find with the key

Anyone any ideas?

Anyone any suggestions as to were even start?

Brake lights work when no other lights are on but as soon as I turn sidelights or low beam On the Brake lights don't light up when pedal is pressed

start by checking the rear light earths & also the engine to chassis earth. if it has failed, then it finds the next best thing, like a clutch/throttle cable.
