Ahhhhhhhh it's doing my head in, I don't know what to go for lol I don't want to spend a fortune but I don't want to end up with crap.

I think the choices are:
Go Pro Hero 960 @ £150 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GoPro-Go-Pro-HD-Hero-1080p-5mp-Action-Sports-Camera-Surf-Edition-UK-/140738874446?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_Video_Camcor ders&hash=item20c4b0cc4e

However I don't like the idea of not having a screen to see what you're pointing at, and they don't use a traditional screw fitment as far as I'm aware so you'd need to find a way of mounting it on the rollcage.

So option two...

Handheld camcorder/compact digital camera and a nice rollcage mount like this:

http://www.cameragrip.co.uk/acatalog/sc2.jpg
http://www.cameragrip.co.uk/acatalog/hague_sc2_clamp.html

Was going to use my old digital camera however it's not new enough to use SDHC cards so can't get above 2gb storage for it which rules that out.

This is the quality I got with my 7/8 year old Canon compact digital camera so looking for no worse than this:

Help me spend my money lol

I have got the go pro and have an lcd bacpac for it so you can see what you are filming but you have to turn the screen off or it drains the battery ,the roll cage mounts are pretty cheap i think something like a tenner, there is a vid on here i think that i took with it but the sound is crap as i bodged the mount onto my support rather than a gopro one but the picture is very good

I'm just about to buy this for our comp safari racer. They are offering it for a very good price at the moment and I believe it will be worth every penny and comes with all the accessories you will need:

Ive got a contour hd for my bike, you can get handlebar mounts for them as well so would be easy to mount to a cage, good quality as well and ive only ever used it on the low image quality setting. ill see if ive uploaded any to youtube now

Id go for a variant of the go pro, messed around with my mates a few times on my cars and out on the ktm and the stability and picture quality is awesome. Really steady and really smooth. Sound was really good but was slightly muffled at times.

1080p hd for £130

quick vid to show quality, bit shakey cos it was mounted to my goggle strap but not too bad. and it was on the lowest quality picture setting

Cheers for the suggestions and sample vids guys! That Hero Motorsports for £140 does look good value for money as it comes with suction mounts, sticky mounts and all sorts I think?

That Contour HD one looks decent quality too, although if it doesn't have a screen I'm still concerned about setting it up right.

Mazz I think the mount I linked to is the same as yours, looks great for mounting options (going to be a pain to mount mine in a good position so the more flexible the better).

The contour can be hooked up to an ipod to set it, using the ipod as a sort of remote viewing screen, or theres two little laser lights built in you can use if you have something to aim them at

Iain
14-04-12, 07:26 PM
Don't have an iPod :( I've seen a video of setting up a GoPro using an external screen tho which looked pretty cool.

Think I'm gonna go for that mount and a nice compact camera, complete setup for £150 and can use it for normal pictures too. Job jobbed.

Nova_Tek

Mobile phone maybe? If you got a modern day smartphone within the last year they tend to have minimum 720p video recording @ 30 frames per sec. and seeing as you wont be zooming it'll look fine when viewed back.

Otherwise there was a thread a while back with little cameras that you could buy for less than £10 from ebay that had surprisingly good video capture and quality. I'll try find the thread.

Where is cadwell mate

Look it up you lazy so-and-so.

I do have a brand new smartphone but I like to use it as a phone and not fix it to my car lol Plus it's always fun to spend money.

I've used one of those £10 cameras and wasn't overly impressed with audio quality, video quality was wobbly but I think that's cos I attached it to a seat.

Hmmm, fair enough. spending money is fun!

I'd personally use my phone. Maybe look at them cheap HD handheld camcorders that have decent quality and are small and light.

Good call imo, that mount can be mounted to the top of your cage to fit between your ears..

Iain

lol At the way you worded that, yes I have massive ears.

Iain

Well I've got the mount from post #1, and a Canon IXUS 115 HS, and for the life of me I can't stop the video vibrating like mad when attached to the car. FFS!

I tried some of that rubbery padded anti-slip mat and it seems to help; just around the cage where the clamp is.

Original vibrations:

And with a bit of padding:

Gonna get a big reel of it tomorrow and see if I can dampen it enough to be usable!

Nice! Love the V6 sound, looks fun.. i see you edit the parts where you under take the slow mo's at 100mph on the motorway! lol

Not bad at all for a phone mounted to the cage, they get that slight flex look in the image, but a good cheep way to do it!

Iain, here's the clamp/mount i got, but has a new ball socket now..

Works fine that. Although Ive a feeling the sound will be uber distorted at full chat in track conditions. Very impressed at lack of vibration though. I was expecting serious wobble.

I'll get my camera genius mate to look at the light metering and see if he can sort it out for cabin.
