View Full Version : Anyone for abit of pikey lowering?
What do you do, when you cant afford lowering springs for your BMW 318, cant remove the struts because their rusted solid, and have limited tools?
Well, you fit Nova -60mm springs to the rear of your BMW (Thats not the bad part)
And for the front i hear you ask? Well... why not chop your springs in position?

And before anyone asks, yes i took this picture, purely for ****s and giggles!! :p
New addition to the Haynes manual lol
If it sits in its origional position securely its a pass and advise MOT wise i wouldnt do it fooookin hate chopped springs ride is ****e!!
Its more the fact that the spring compressors were doing feck all, especially the one on the right around 2 coil's, chopping springs is pikey nevermind doing it while still on the shock! dangerous more than anything!
Lol. any photos afterwards?

a lad i know used the oxy accetalene :) the spring just callapsed like a melted welly
How are people like this still alive?
Just take the car to craig for an MOT and the spring will snap in half of its own accord lol
pfft use a grinder with it in position. did my BM like that just to get rid of the body roll for a few weeks before my kit turned up. Audi was chopped on all 4 corners with them in place.
its not exactly dangerous. whats the worst that will happen, the spring pinches the slitting disc and it goes bang?

whats the worst that will happen, the spring pinches the slitting disc and it goes bang catches you in the eye blinds you for life or takes a finger off slits your wrist with the fragments?
hmm
To be fair a cutting disc can go bang at any time, which is why you wear goggles etc while using them, always.
...Well sometimes.
Or just close your eyes.
lol glasses are always worn. ive had loads go bang on me. ive got into the habit of wearing welding gauntlets too. except when im using a knotted wire wheel. then i like to take half of my nail off :/

I met a guy last night who had a fiesta sat 2cm of the ground on standard springs. Apparently, it just didn't handle. He bought it like that for £300, matt grey and 8-9j rear wheels. It looked nuts.

Cutting springs is never an acceptable way of lowering a car, the spring will never sit in the cup properly and any progressiveness in the spring will be removed, there are right ways of doing things and this is not one of them.

i've never had a cutting disc go bang, even using an ultra thin blade, i've had quite a large part taken off the circumference and even the centre detaching on a 9" grinder, ifit was to go bang then the guard should stop it coming towards you

I've had cutting discs explode on me several times and it's amazing where the bits can end up, picking shards of cutting disc out of ya face is never fun, all I Can say is thank yoda I was wearing safety glasses.

If they weren't being bent as they we're cutting they would be fine. I regularly use ultra thin discs that are 1MM wide, when they catch they don't hesitate to take a 5MM circumference off the outer edge, but keeping the disc at a straight angle while cutting will make sure it doesn't shatter

I've also never had a blade shatter and when it's lost it cutting edge I still try to ram it through even when it's lit up like ceramic brakes
my god...... has baxter been breeding or something?????
1. don't take the piss with grinders.
2. if you can afford it, buy proper size lowered springs.. failing that, if you can safely cut them down so they still fit ok, then do it... but don't use gas to cut them.

cut springs are an unconfortable ride but a great budget way of lowering your car, but doesnt work on every car. it all depends on how the springs sit.
i used to get paid £30 to £40 a time to cut young boy racers springs when i was a teenager lol
